need help finding correct tyre info

My brother vauxhall astra h 1.3 cdti is getting ready for new rubber

However his manual only states the thyre size
195/65/r15

Currently fitted is 91v
But online tyre websites state 91h

Can anybody confirm for me which is needed?

V or H is the max speed rating of the tyre

H = max speed 130mph
V= max speed = 149mph

It doesnt really matter which he gets to be honest but H is probably better as although never going to get to those speeds as its only a 1.3 diesel 130mph is theoretically more realistic to acheive with this car than 149mph so the tyre will perform a bit better and to its potential a bit more

aware the speed rating meaning, but i want to confirm what is the correct speed rated tyre

But since he's got V's - there only a little bit more - might just play it safe

he's already told me the ""admitted speed" in the manual aint what it gets

So i'll get some more V's to be sure

make me wonder why H is higher then a T rated, when H is before T in the alphabet..... i'll never know

You know what the ratings mean you know the top speed of the car and you know the recommended rating to be fitted? What is there to be safe about?

There is no way on gods green earth his car will exceed 130mph he'd be lucky to get 110mph the only reason V rated tyres are on the car is because at some point that was what the garage had when they needed changing.

The only thing an insurance company will care about is if the tyres have tread on them if there where an accident, no insurance company is going to pay out if you exceed the speed rating of the tyre because you would have to be doing nearly twice the maximum legal limit of any uk road

It really actually doesn't matter the price difference will be naff all but why ask if you were going to adopt a 'on the safe side' attitude. It makes it a pointless thread.

I don't get the obsession with tyres on the forum?

my 500 came with 195/45 R15 84V's when the manual only calls for H rated tyres, I will fit V rated tyres in the future because there's a better selection, but I only need H's to stay legal

Don't put to much trust in what's on the car vs. what the book says. The Clio I just p/xed has higher rated fitted simply because:

1. the dealer I went to when I needed tyres in a hurry only had three of the standard rating in the right size
2. buying four higher-rated tyres triggered a discount that made them cheaper than the standard rated anyway

So.. check the book and when you're getting a couple of quotes ask the dealers to check what the car needs in their references. Most of the online sources will do a reg search for you.

I had a set of Avons fitted to Mrs. Beard's 156 that were higher rated than the manufacturer's spec, only because the tyre fitter could get them slightly cheaper than the correct ones.

As an aside, a long time ago a mate of mine had a very nice Mk2 Capri 3.0S which he'd had quite a lot of work done on: new heads with bigger valves, free flow exhausts and three Weber twin chokes. He also had a lovely set of Minilites that had come off a competition Capri. To those he fitted some of the then new Pirelli P7s.

Unfortunately, he didn't have any work carried out on the suspension and one day on Long Hill between Buxton and Whaley Bridge the tyres made it round a bend.....alas, the rest of the car didn't.
