R.I.P. Maggie

Interesting that on 4 news they went to Consett 10 mins up the road to get a perspective on a town decimated by Thatcher...

Conservative mp talking head of the former miners union..

a gradual faze out would have been less hard on communities

rover built crap cars. British ships were quality

people buy quality no matter the price, that is why Germany is where Britain once was, they invested where thatcher closed down

British ships probably were Quality but there is now way on earth we could compete with the Chinese, it's just way to labour intense......

In my own opinion the demise of UK heavy industry was caused by the demands of the work force pushing costs so high the companies became uncompetitive

Probably because it holds the purse strings of europe.

that would be us if it wasn't for thatcher

cant blame the workers thatcher sold off all the council houses and didn't use the money to build more, so workers had to demand more money to be able to buy some where to live. a large % of German workers live in state owned property

While I was born when Maggie was in power I can't say I remember much about her. From what I have seen on TV and read in papers and on-line I fell I have to sit on the fence a bit. Yes she certainly upset a lot of people but she also moved the country forward in a way I doubt any other politician at the time could have done. One positive thing she did was denationalise BT. Without her we might all still be on expensive dial up and have Post Office phones hard wired into the phone outlet:

she moved the country backwards not forwards, same as present government they wont be happy until the poor are back in work houses.

a nationalised telephone company may have given us faster broadband sooner, where i live its still not a lot faster than dial up

where i live its still not a lot faster than dial up

I suppose that's her fault too.
The reason you haven't got fast broadband is because its not cost effective to give you fast broadband. That would be true whoever runs the telecoms company. Why would anyone want to subsidize something that is not going to pay for itself?

We have a rubbish public transport system in Bucks, a good one wouldn't be cost effective, that's because most families have two cars and only the over 60's and under 17's use the buses. Try and explain why some villages only get one bus a day? How are the passengers supposed to get home? They have to use a taxi.

well if people are claiming its because of her we are not on dial up then it must be her fault that the whole country isn't running on fast broadband, a public company wouldn't be working for its shareholders

Ever tried ringing BT to report a fault.. Bet at one time it was all handled by uk call centre staff Now well im sorry But try explaining a fault to someone who can't even pronounce your name its like talking to a brick wall...

(this has nothing to do with racism or anything like that)

But i want a decent level of service not to have to resort to talking like im speaking to a 5 year old....

"Yes. The . Phone Not Work Properly,.."

"ahh ok mr Mogonei it be £120 friday enineer come if no fault!"

Rather than Hello i have a fault on my BT line There is a lot of line noise I have unplugged the front of the master socket and tested it there with a spare phone and done a quiet line test and there is still an issue .......

"ok thats not a problem We charge £120 if the fault is not on BT's side but you seem to have ruled that out by bypassing the internal system and connecting direct to the incoming phone line"

If it was still National the Staff would be Employed in the UK = less people without a job who want to work less time waiting for the staff to answer as they are having the same thing repeated over and over again until you can get them to understand you have a problem...

And they called it progress i thought Maggi wanted us to be a "service industry based country" and what's happened all the privatised companies that rely on call handling they have all buggered off to India where its cheap and you cant get a good level of service :worship:

(wait till you have to speak to someone who doesnt have english as a first language when you need the emergency services when your house is burning down and they can't even pronounce the name of your town let alone your street name.... )

You seriously didnt expect on a public forum with people based all over the country and with people on here that were effected or had family members that were effected during the thatcher era to praise her or be dignified when she passed?

Communities, families and lives were destroyed by ultimately this woman and her puppets

You are living in cloud coockoo land if you thought that

Strange thing is that my problems started in Blair's era, he did more to screw this country than Thatcher ever did. He was so desperate to hand over all power to Brussels (or Germany & France as the EU should be called) that he forgot who he should have been working for (the British people).

The bottom line is that all politicians by definition of wanting to be one should not under any circumstance be allowed to become one.

Whether you mourn the passing of Thatch or not depends on a number of factors, clearly. Personally, my opinion is coloured by memories as a 7yr old watching my proud dad be reduced to little more than a wreck due to the miner's strikes. My dad has always been a law abiding bloke and proud to have served 9 years in the navy. Being given no choice but to join the pickets in sometimes violent or aggressive activities for in order to get his hands on the £2 a day that was being offered did nothing for him. My parent's marriage very nearly ended in divorce due to the stress of it all. I remember our family and lots like us having to rely on free food parcels and the kindness of people in the community just to avoid starving.
I saw villages and towns ruined, many of them never recovering.
I'll concede that she was a strong leader and that quality has indeed been lacking in the string of puppets we've had to endure since, but her strength bordered on being a psychopath. In this respect, her potential to cause harm was only matched by that idiot Scargill.
I shed no tears for Thatch because I remember what her and her goons did to my family and my village. However, I'm not so blinkered that I can't see that she was doing a tough job and had to make some tough decisions, so I grudgingly give her respect for that.
