right im at uni and for one subject i have 3 assignments. assignment 1 is worth 40% assignment 2 is worth 20% and assignment 3 is worth 40%.
in assignment 1 i got 55%
in assignment 2 i got 15% ( i know i fukd up)

what do i need to get in assignment 3 to get an overall 40% for all 3 assignments?

for the 1st 2 assignments i get that i got 25% overall but that dont seem right.

can any one help me? (y)

Right, see if i can do it without a calc.

55% of 40 is 22 (0.55*40)
15% of 20 is 3 (0.15*40)
i.e. total so far out of 60 points is 25.

You require an additional 15 points from the final one, which will be a percentage of (15/40)*100 hence you require approximately 37% in your final assignment (check the number yourself :))

Hope that helps.

0.55 * 0.4 + 0.15 * 0.2 = 0.22 + 0.03 = 0.25 = 25% as you said.
From assignment 3 you need 15% of your overall mark, but because it's only worth 40% of your overall mark, you actually need 0.15 / 0.4 = 0.375 = 37.5%

So you need to get at least 37.5% on assignment 3 to get 40% overall. Best you can hope for overall is 65% (if you get 100% on assignment 3), worst is 25% (if you get 0% on assignment 3).

Paul's right - you've got 25% overall so far (22% from assignment 1, and 3% from assignment 2). Therefore you need another 15%. I figured out you need a mark of 37.5% in assignment 3 to make 40% overall. (y)

Beaten to it (again!) :D

It's right since the second assignment had such a small weighting compared to the total.

It's one reason why I am a dumbass for spending tens of hours of cwks that are sometimes only worth 5% each of a module worth 10% of the year...worth 10% of the total degree.

I just do the best I can and get the highest mark I can, if i need 1% or 100% I'd still probably put in the same effort.

As does she, but she likes to know prior to receiving her results, so that she knows straight away when she gets her result, if she is still on course. Personally I always aim for 100%, but I have been known to slip to 98% from time to time.
