I washed my gutters and fascias yesterday and realised need to get the gutters cleaned. I suspect the best option will be the "shop" vacuum with no filter and just suck out all the sand. All I need is a dry week.

Re: What's made you smile today? (Part II)

My Uncle has bought a Scudo converted to a motor caravan. Very nice looking vehicle. I was just thinking of my comments on looking under the bonnet.

Two things struck my.

Air intake in the bonnet has two duckbill drains to let the water out. Then there are the twin 2 foot high drain pipes with a funnel on the top for the duck bills to drain into. 1 each side. I love it! There is nearly as much pipes and guttering as on my house.

Then there is the small matter of the oil filler. I burst out laughing when I saw where it was, and asked him how he was going to top it up if needed.

After a while I noticed two yellow caps under the scuttle panel, I wonder what those do...

Close investigation and its became apparent that these were end caps to the 9 inch long oil filler extension tube that is clipped under the scuttle. What marvellous engineering solutions the Italians produce. How you are supposed to use this thing without getting totally covered in oil I have no idea. I think I will get him a funnel with a nice long outlet and a hook so it can be hung up, or a jug with a long flexi spout.

Main thing is he really likes the drive and the conversion is ingenious.

Rebuilt and bled my mountain bike brakes and wow the thing properly stops.
I only pootle along so had not realised how bad the brakes had become.

They are billet machined like miniature motorbike brakes so the seal grooves get clogged over time and jam the pistons. Before you know it only half of them are doing anything.

GB news has been set up as a reaction to "cancel culture" apparently.

Various groups are now petitioning companies to not advertise on their channel.

Totally plays into their hands, you can't buy that level of publicity!

Re: What's made you smile today? (Part II)

House painting 75% done and the hard bit is over. whoever thought painting houses was a good idea. Its mad! Next to replace fascias. Its cheaper to cover with plastic over board than to paint with two coats of quality paint. No contest. Also my soakaway is installed and connected so, if we get the predicted rain, I shall find out if it works, if its a big enough capacity and if not .... what happens when the soakaway is over loaded. A 1000 litre wheelie bin , minus the top, - thats a cold frame now- upside down and 6 feet deep.

Reduce Re-use Recycle was the jangle! I think its the best re-use I have ever done. Particularly the cold frame which is ace.

I am now up to 731 years outstanding jobs completed!

Fuel consumption measured in Wh/mi (watts per mile).
Charged overnight on cheap tariff electric, costs about 1.20, gives around 250 miles range. My journey there today in the Fabia, 36 miles each way, @54mpg and 1.25/lit, gives my round trip cost of 7.57.

However, cost of Fabia, 2 years ago, 8k. Cost of Tesla model 3, 48,490.

With my 40k saving, at today's fuel price and usage rate, I can travel 380,616 miles. Reduced a little by road tax at 20/yr (Tesla is zero), and servicing will be less on the Tesla as there's little to service, but at least 300,000 miles could be mine.

Plus of course there's the cost of the charging unit at home.

Difficult comparison, but I'm thinking ICE cars will appreciate in value for a while when no new ones are available.

Re: What's made you smile today? (Part II)

The DeSoto made its debut in my little towns first cruise night of the summer tonight. A lot of Detroit Iron with a sprinkling from the other side of the pond.

On the left is a 1964 Dodge, DeSoto in the center, and a 1936 Ford Pickup street rod. I didn't get many pics because you should charge a phone every now and then. European offerings were a 1964 Mini Cooper, a 1972 Beetle, and a couple of newer Beemers and Audis. Otherwise, there was the usual smattering of Tri-Five Chevys, Corvettes, Mustangs, and Mopar muscle cars.

I had many nice comments on the DeSoto and spent a lot of time explaining how the M6 semi automatic transmission works. Also spent some breath on how advanced the car was for 1948; electric choke and wipers, self canceling turn signals, along with the Fluid Drive and M6 transmission.

The trip home in the Fabia was somehow more pleasant, not sure why. More tactile perhaps.
Previous day I'd done a 110 mile round trip in the Panda, much of it on the M4 at 70mph. Happier journey than either Fabia or Tesla.
