Re: What's made you smile today? (Part II)

Big one coming up - Golden wedding anniversary! We're still in stage 3 lockdown so can't do any meaningful celebrating but the least I can do is get a nice card (We'll be celebrating later when we can). So I took Becky (our Panda) down to Ocean Terminal Mall to look for one. The card shop had almost no-one in it - one couple - and one of the assistants, when I told him it was our 50th anniversary, made it his personal mission of the day to help find a suitable card. We quite quickly found a really lovely one. - Top man!

Flushed with this success I decided to stick my head into HMV and see if there were any S.F. Blu Ray bargains to be had. This meant walking the length of the mall. The concourse has stalls down the middle - nail bar, Sky sales point, mobile phone accessories and the like. First floor is very similar with restaurant seating and galleries where you can look down to the ground floor taking up the center space. Top floor is the cinema. Each floor is very well "covid" signposted with large directional stickers on the floor leaving you in no doubt that you are to walk up one side, socially distanced, of the central divide and return on the other. They really might as well not have bothered though. There were more people walking against the signed direction than with it! There weren't many people there either! so it wasn't because it was busy! I've learned over the years that there's no point in trying to point out the errors of peoples ways, so I just smiled to myself, made sure my mask was well tucked in, and kept my mouth shut.

New phone arrived today and just setup. What it was doing it's data transfer I thought sod it and bought a new tablet - splashing the cash on tech upgrades this week

Old one is 9.5 years old, and it's replacement was small change in comparison to the phone

Think we'll leave the computer upgrade for another year or 3

Re: What's made you smile today? (Part II)

My only extravagance tech wise...other than putting a nice head unit in the car is a nice phone (as in nicer and higher spec than I could get away with). Oh and an Xbox one X...and a 4k UHD telly...you know what not only perhaps one of my many techy toys.

Anyway between a nice phone and a tablet you'll probably find you never switch the computer on.

I only maintain a crap laptop for bank statements which you can't get on a mobile operating system. Otherwise it's much easier to do it on my phone when I get a minute.

Re: What's made you smile today? (Part II)

I have a long tail lift on my van for loading mobility scooters. looks like some one drove into it when parked and bent an arm on it. Local specialist priced the job up, can only get part as a complete kit £800 plus vat plus fitting at £80 an hour.
took bent arm off took it to local engineers got it straightened and a plate welded on to strengthen it up cost £20

....

as the sun comes slowly up at dawn... the old farts brain slowly flows into life... The rev counter that doesn't work has magically come back to life and is working perfectly. Hooray.

I suppose it pays to actually look at the rev counter not the speedometer before condemning the former as busted. Speedo's do tend to show 0 when the car is stationary.

I need this lockdown to finish before total brain death is confirmed.

I must remember to change gear and not wait for the automatic gearbox to change up.......

[QUOTE=Pugglt Auld Jock;4565851]Big one coming up - Golden wedding anniversary!

Delighted for you both and for sharing with us. Don't forget you can apply for a card from HM The Queen. Did this for mum and dad many years back now and again on the 60th. Not sure if its your thing but my mum was very pleased! I am just a short termer at 41 years. I expect she will have killed me (justifiable homicide I think they call it) before the big 50! You are are clearly much better behaved than I am.

Re: What's made you smile today? (Part II)

For some reason Mrs Jimboy and I overdid the refreshments and goodies last night. Horrendous heartburn through the night and this morning Every Friday we do a face time zoom meal with an old friend who is on his own now, we go way back. The craic was good and we obviously got carried away. I never have hangovers but the heartburn raises its ugly head when really over doing things.

My wife and I are now on a no alcohol until Christmas

Just to add, we carried on Saturday as well. Aye we did get the taste. Good fun at the time.

A problem with which I am often afflicted because the Panda and ibiza have them opposite ways around. More than once I've found myself speeding because I'm looking at what in "the other car" would be the speedo but is actually the rev counter in "this" one! I've been meaning to do myself a wee post it type note for both cars to remind me.

Now retired it's weekend every day for us! Or would be if the kids didn't keep asking us to look after grandchildren - but we love it!

FIAT in their wisdom performed a 'mirror image' swap of petrol and temp gauges @2009

.not super helpful

Re: What's made you smile today? (Part II)

Oddest bit of car maintenance I've ever done..

Fired it up, set the temperature, whacked a USB stick in and drove to my destination by which time the firmware was the latest version.

It does say don't drive while doing it...but given there was just a bar with "updating x%" on the screen and there's there's very clear instructions the engine must run while the update is taking place and an estimated time of 40 minutes I wasn't going to sit in a car idling 40 mins so waited until I had a 40 minute trip to do to tackle it. As it it was it took half the advertised time...but the only difference I can see is the Citroen logo fades up when you start the car now rather than just flicking on.

Suppose I'd have been snookered if I stalled it

Other bonus would be doing 1 hr 30 round trip for myself and the boys exercise without having to cope with at this point very annoying fan on the Mazda...roll on pay day.

Also it was a rather nice day..
