My neighbour told me he saw a diesel version of my 500, and he didn't know that they even had a diesel. Had to explain that it was Diesel, and a designer version.

Why did they stop doing the 500 multijet? Was it to do with not meeting Euro 6 specifications? Or just poor sales?

Poor sales I'd imagine: they still put the 1.3 diesel in the Tipo, if I remember rightly.

Typical fiat, it actually sold reasonably well by in their wisdom I think the decision was made that people wouldn't want a small diesel and so the petrol was the only car they would want.

I think they stopped it when the twinair came out, as supposedly the twinair was as economical as the multijet (it wasn't).

I think they still sell it in some other countries

Some of the decision making by FCA on models and specs seems bizarre at times. For example - the Levante released in the UK with the only engine option being the VM Motori V6!

I think sense and a few irate dealers has persuaded them to offer the petrol version over here now.

Another one - the Giulia has no manual gearbox option in the UK.

I think it does. The website does not work properly, so it is difficult to get past the top model Quadrifoglio, which is auto only. Lesser models are manuals.

Indeed, tbh Diesel isn't required in small modern cars imo, especially those designed to spend a lot of their life in the city, so I'm actually all for that decission.

Cheers! I'll have another look...

Not that I can afford one anyway - but it's good to be prepared in case I find 30 grand behind the sofa cushions one day!

There is a link for the standard car underneath the QV and it seems only to offer an automatic gearbox when you select the engine choice at the beginning... http://carconfigurator.alfaromeo.com...a/default.aspx

The reviews I've seen of the Guilia suggest in the UK it's auto only. However the ones that mention the manual do seem to think it's probably a good thing as the shift isn't great.

I agree, on a car where the standard one can do 50mpg anyway it's not really necessary. While I'm sure someone somewhere will be doing 20k a year in a 500 I would be very surprised if the average mileage of all the 500s on the road exceeds 10k.

Re: What's made you smile today? (Part II)

When I accessed the configurator I just got a strange error message demanding that I turn the screen 90degrees. As this is a desktop PC, that might be difficult. Expanding the browser to full screen made it happy, and I got the configurator.
It does appear to be auto only.
When it was first introduced, I had a look, and there were manuals listed then, so later they've dropped them for the UK.
Still can't afford one.

Re: What's made you smile today? (Part II)

Got round to checking the fault codes on my Alfa 156 today. Nine in total and I was stating to price up all the sensors, probes and stuff in my head when I noticed the air intake temperature sensor was unplugged.

Plugged it back in, reset with the OBD and the engine light has stayed off all day.

One of the reasons the car was so cheap was because the light was on. Now it's even spritelier, smoother and the AC works.

Because it was unplugged the ECU probably stayed at zero so it was drinking fuel throwing the Lambda and other sensors out. Fixed one solved the others.

Just new bushes for the engine stabiliser and that's the advisories sorted.
