So i saw some people in the grumpy thread talking about SAD, i had no idea what it was so i googled it and got seasonal affective disorder

the symptoms seem frighteningly similar to what i get i just never pinned it down to the seasons changing and the lack of sunlight etc

so now I'm starting to wonder if i am affected by SAD so any suggestions as to what i should do next? or is it all in my head :p

I think you need to go buy a mankini, a flute and a large wooden spoon, cover yourself in jelly and go for a run though a field. That will make you feel better
 
To answer your question I would either consult your GP (depending on how severe it is) or look into some light therapy. I suffer from SAD very severley (can sleep 18 hours a day with ease) and people generally put it down to laziness, which is annoying as hell. People get different symptoms but unless it affects your everyday life then I wouldn't worry too much about it.

From the sounds of it you just feel a bit down at times and sleep a bit longer than normal? (correct me if I'm wrong though!). Millions of people get this every year and is often put down to 'winter blues' but it is SAD, just a milder version.

As I say if you feel as though it is affecting your everyday life then consult your GP, if not then it's nothing to worry about :)

I wouldn't say it affecting my everyday life as such except maybe the mood swings

biggest thing for me is how extremely difficult it is to wake up in the mornings and constant tiredness, i also have a lot of aches and pains also head aches.

I might try one of them sun rise alarm clock things and see if that helps

Vitamin D...lack of. Occurs naturally when you're in the sun. Some say that's why some of us Scots are a bit grumpy, lack of sun.:cool: That's another story though. Up your intake of vitamin D....:)

I dont think i suffer from S.A.D, but i noticeabley feel tireder at this time of year, I feel grumpy because that i feel that there isnt enough day light to do everything, and because its got darker I get tireder, making me more grumpy.. and because of this i binge eat, making me more grumpy when i put on weight.... :bang: Its a vicious circle.

I cant say I prefer summer, in fact I hate warm weather, so been warm and the temperature been above 20 degrees annoys me.

Give me summer daylight hours with winter temperatures anyday.. :eek:

Might go back to Scotland :rolleyes:

That's essentially what S.A.D is, shorter days mean more melatonin production and less seratonin resulting in tiredness, lethargy and mood being 'down'. That is what light therapy does, it helps your body produce more seratonin to counteract the overproduction of melatonin. I take medication for mine which is basically an anti-depressant, even though I don't get depression, because it's an S.S.R.I which is basically seratonin.

There are other ways to help like more exercise, certain foods etc but they're not really worth it in the long run.
 
I find it harder to motivate myself when it's miserable outside. That's about it though.

Love the sunshine, but don't mind crap weather, gives me an excuse to have a lazy day in watching telly.

I love snow, too.
