I do quite a lot of driving which takes me through a good many areas where average speed cameras operate & I've often wondered if they are actually working or not as I see a lot of drivers going way over the posted limit.
Today I made a conscious effort to note just how many.
Over three contraflows I counted 75 cars overtaking me, and all going much faster than the posted limit (based on how quickly they caught up, overtook and drove away. Two 50mph zones and a 60. On all three occasions I was travelling at the given speed according to my tacho.
So, multiplying this out over the great many places where ASCs are located & we would surely have half the driving population fined by now?

I only saw one driver slow right down as he approached the camera - obviously not aware of the meaning of 'average speed'.
So, anyone been caught or know anyone?

I remember reading something - how true it is I don't know - that if you change lanes between cameras in an average speed zone it can't track you. It smells like bulls--- but perhaps not if that's what these folk are doing.

I doubt thats true because its not like they have a camera for each lane, and if you cross lanes then you might come into the camera view even quicker then have more chance of getting a ticket

I see alot of people brake as they pass each camera, which makes me laugh, obviously the 'Average' bit completely escapes them.

I usually stick within 5mph of the limit being enforced & set the speed limiter to beep at me if i go over.

I do reckon a huge amount of these cameras arn't actually switched on, but so many people have at least 3 points that surely some people do get caught. Maybe a Freedom of Information request to the relevent Highway Authority (Highways Agency for M-Way & Trunk Roads or Local Council for others) would reveal the truth.

when they first came out they was not approved for lane swapping (it was in the motorcycle news... even tho these cameras dont effect bikes because they face forward :) ). but ive heard they are now approved so swapping lanes wont work

Thing I often wonder about is do they take your photo and speed at each camera than average it out or do they also take the times between them into account

I know a trucker who regularly drives through at 56mph and doesn't let up his speed and has never been caught. Which also leaves me to ask how accurate are the cameras, do they have the 10%+2 ruling??

What annoys me is when people panic brake and slow from 50 to 40 before every single camera :bang::bang:

The only one i know of that does work is, speed camera vans on the motorway, they can only be set to read one lane at a time, but which lane it's set for is the gamble

Depends how its manned

If its a ANPR style one - depends on how many camera's
So 1 or 2 could be present, so again its chance

if its a manually operated one - its upto the operator to track who he thinks is going fast
