Hey guys, seeing as last year was an unmitigated disaster for some people (i.e the ones that got stuck for 8 hours on certain roads etc), and some if not a whole lot were wholly unprepared.

So, shall we see if we can compile a list that we should all take note of and maybe checklist before we make journeys, long or short, this (supposedly really bad) winter.

  • Warm, extra clothes (hat, gloves, socks)
  • Tyre pressure checker/inflater (you can let air out of your tyres for tackling tough snow)
  • Food and water (things that don't go out of date, biscuits, crisps, tinned food snacky stuff to keep you going. I had a bottle of coke in my boot last year but it bloody froze lol)
  • Light snow shovel (just in case you find yourself sliding and end up in a pile of snow, or to help someone stranded)
  • Phone, obviously
  • Full or near full tank of fuel in case you need to have the engine on for heat
  • Old carpets/car mats to slip under tyres for grip
  • Small all season camping stove and matches/ spark lighter
  • Snow chains
  • Sleeping bag
  • Tow rope/strop
  • High Vis clothing

Anything else?

Good shouts guys. I guess you could use your car mats as an old carpet replacement if you have rubbish Tesco ones like me lol.

Full or near full tank all the time is a good shout though. You may need to leave the car running for a period of time to keep warm with the fans.

tinned grub, tin opener if not ring pull cans..

Snow chains,

small sleeping bag,

Tow strop (thicker than tow rope)

Survival bag

Now how would you rather spend overnight in your car?

freezing your nuts off (again no need for condoms) or will a belly full of warm food a few cups of sweet tea (have tea bags in car anyway for work) and seat laid back wrapped up in a nice warm sleeping bag

You could always share the sleeping bag with the GILF in the car behind and suggest you stay warm together ......

i'm northern. a touch of frost is nothing
you have to look at the odds with only 140 miles per week
but in all honesty if it was due to snow i would probabily get the train or get the ntoes via an email

i will make the train one of these

A torch, preferably not one that relies on batteries.

I usually keep a small bottle of concentrated screen wash in the boot in the winter. Can also be used as emergency deicer (just keep it off the paintwork).

Duck tape, hose clamps and a small toolset are usefully things to have all year round for quick get me home repairs.

My winter prep consists of strong screen wash...

I've managed a winter with a Punto that had snow and ice on the inside of the window when returning to it after work, no heater matrix and a commute of 30 miles every day during 'winter'. Not to mention two tyres close to the limit, Im sure i'll be fine.

I think all i'll prepare myself with is a whiteboard marker incase some clownshoe hits me in the ice, that's it.
