Thoughts?

I still struggle to believe there are 17 year olds out on the roads.

Things like this:

http://www.thesun.co.uk/scotsol/homepage/news/3865365/Teenager-dies-in-car-horror-smash.html

are a very common occurance.

I myself was responsible for terrible, and reckless driving at times. I still can't believe some of the things I did, and I'm sure most of you who passed young think the same as you grow older.

The roads are a very dangerous place and I don't think kids should be allowed on them, for their sake, and for others.

I'd still class 18 year olds as kids too.

Immature little clots.

Does nobody agree though? A car is a killing machine, if not handled properly it can do serious damage to yourself and others. I just don't think 17-20 year olds understand this concept.

Oh, and another massive PLUS POINT is we'd stop seeing these topics:

'Air filter for 1.2 8v'
'Bodykit - thoughts?'
'More out of 1.2 8v'

etc

Other positives:

Insurance wouldn't be so expensive for the people who pass at 21.
Insurance would be cheaper for the rest of us because accidents like the one I posted wouldn't occur so frequently.
The standard of driving would improve massively.
It wouldn't be as cool to drive like a jebend.

And we can also ban over 70s whilst we're at it.

For the same reasons as above, except replace the last one with 'Less likely to die at wheel'

i can see that the pros would out do the cons in rasing the age.

some one like me, i have only been driving for 6 months (23 years old mind) and all i try to do is drive as cheeply as possable.

i would of thought it would drop the price of insurance a fair bit as it would make the roads slightly safer.

the way i would do it is keep the age at 17, but make it so you can only pass the car test after say you are 18 -19.
therefore you can have 1 or 2 years driving around under supervision rather than banging in for the test as soon as you hit 17.

(i want to know how these 17 year olds have passed there test only weeks after there 17th birthday... and also how they can be able to afford it all them selves!)

about drivers over 70, i still think that if you can pass the medical then you are still able to drive. however i do think that a reaction time test should be a part of the medical test.

MJ, did a 17yo run over your cat or something? :p

For what it is worth, over here you don't get your solo licence until you are 18. Then, you are on heavy restrictions (really heavy) for the first 12 months, then the next three years you are on lighter restrictions, till finally at a minimum of 22 you are on your full licence.

I must admit looking back to when I was 18 (I'm 25 now) I have grown up ALOT since then even though I wouldn't admit it at the time.

I really don't think it's a sensible option keeping them off the road. I was an IT Engineer at the age of 17 and NEEDED a car and license so I could do my job. If I hadn't been able to drive it would have held my career back substantially :(.

Yes, this has been raised or similar at times, & at an educated guess, different age groups will have different views, aye OK obvious:D I come from a time when my first car was "freedom" Most like me had never heard the word mod.

Statistics say there are fewer deaths on the roads at the moment, but up here in the Highlands it seems a young driver is killed every other day. Publicity plays a big part in ramming this home, well again obvious. I honestly think a time will be just round the corner when some sort of recommendation will have to be put forward. It's only too easy to say that the driving age should be increased, but I think something will change. Educating from an early age has been bandied about for yonks, but by the time a young male is ready to sit behind a wheel, he usually has a pocket full of money & body full of testosterone. Quite a combination.

If you want to get technical then you can have 16 year olds on the road.
however look at the economy and job situation now
stopping people driving for 4 years could seriously limit their opportunitities.
I dont think now is a time to limit the choices open to people starting out on life

I agree it's hard enough as it is! However they are idiots... But how can you sensibly address an issue such as that.

I guess it's a social / educational issue more than anything?
