Ok, need help with word... I want to create a table of contents of a document, but i don't want it in the same document because its three pages long, and I can only start numbering pages at 0.

Is there any way I can keep the table of contents in another word document, but keep it linked to the main document? or am I going to have to muck around with sections to get the pages numbered i, ii, iii, iv etc... because I can't really be arsed with that.

p.s. copy and paste isn't the answer because I can't just press the update TOC button.

Any good answers appreciated. Unfortunatly I don't think this is car related so can't earn you rep points... perhaps there should be brownie points as well, to show a fiat forum members general helpfulness?

Yey I did it using sections.... word is very counter intuitive sometimes.

i know you answered your own question :) but yeah its possible we do it at work to send a ocument via email all in one if you get me. i use excel for table things usually :D

I used to be able to do it using Microsoft Binder, but some crazy fool (me)decided to update my version of office with office 2002, and its changed quite a lot, they've done away with binder (which also means many of my files are inaccessable) so I feel like a bit of an egit, especially being a computer scientist and all!

In Word 2003, you go insert>pagenumber> and a tick box allow you to uncheck the begin on first page or you can use the format box to choose which page it begins numbering at.

Or you could edit the footer of each page and manually type in the page number you want to show for each page, but that's hardly an efficient option, although if it's only a few pages, it wouldn't take very long.

you can't do that because word won't let you... and at 120 pages I'd be there for weeks, and I can't count.

I now have three sections I've even got the page numbers to count in roman numerals for the contents, nothing for the title page, and normal numbers for the rest of the document!
