When joining a dual carriage way/motorway from a slip road do you:

A) Crawl along it, hoping there is a space for you when you eventually get to the joining point.

B) Match the speed of the traffic you are joining

C) Drive along it with no intention of looking until the very last minute, and end up stopping like you were pulling out of the end of your street.

I'll try to get up to about 60-65ish, depending on the length of the slip, and try to spot a space to get into. To be fair, most of the time the slips that I need to use around here are generally quite quiet when I use them so most folk have already moved across to lane 2 to allow easy entry.

Snap!

B of course. Nothing ****s me more than being held up on a slipway because the car in front isnt accelerating fast enough, or is just driving slowly. Peak hour is a bit different though, match speed to the conditions.

Also do you use the whole of the slip road to enter or do you enter whenever you seem safe? I personally move over as soon as i can if someone is leaving me a space but some people almost go onto the hard shoulder to enter

I tend to move into lane 1 as soon as the chance occurs. If someone is being a tool and not allowing the space, I will use more of it to keep the flow of traffic and begrudgingly move in behind them.

I always match the speed, or sometimes exceed the speed to get my space. If there isn't a space ahead, then I'll match alongside a car/lorry and slow down slightly and nip in behind it.

A lot of people I've been in a car with though tootle along at about 40mph and hope there's a space, coming to a halt if there isn't.

FECK pulling out from a standing start on to a motorway. You have to do this on some A dual roads but they tend to be not as busy.

I've seen this on drivingtestsuccess:

"When using a slip road to join a dual carriageway don't take for granted that traffic already on the dual carriageway will make space for you. Always be prepared to use the full length of the slip road and, if you have to stop and wait at the end of the slip road before pulling out when safe to do so."

And yet I saw a piece of advice "NEVER STOP ON A SLIP ROAD" on another driving tips website.

The thing with learning to drive, there is such a difference between instructors.
If the instructor is a half wit, their pupils have no chance.

Things like slip roads should not be difficult, but through lack of experience/not paying attention/bloody mindedness/ etc, even by the cars on the main carriageway not moving over into lane 2 or making space, it can be made difficult.

You're not allowed on motorways as a learner anyway. ;)

People not moving over to let others out when they clearly can is downright pig ignorant. One of my absolute pet hates.

I hate that too - a bigger hate of mine is when people don't adjust their speed accordingly and forget that it's not always possible to move over.

Something I've noticed having owned and driven several differant types of vehicle that if your in a white van most people in cars don't move over or make life easy for you. In small sporty hatchbacks the older generation give you such a wide berth it's awesome, in normal family cars you seem to get a fair response from other road users. In the landrover people always seem intent on over taking me on slip roads and pulling in front even though I can be doing 70+ at the end of them!!!! When I am towing or recovering other vehicles, lorries and other people towing will help you by moving over and even blocking other motorists that are oblivious to your trailer etc.

Lol I've noticed that too. Whenever I have to take a van to a site (which is only if I can't get a car), only lorries and other vans give you any respect. Car drivers seem to go out of their way to make things difficult (the van has Highway Maintenance plastered all over it too!).

Most lorry drivers have excellent road manner.

With regards the 'learning to drive thing', when I was taking lessons the nearest motorway was 90 miles away, it's not always practical to learn these things with an instructor beside you.

Sorry I didn't mean just motorways, as a learner you can (as I'm sure you know) use Duel carriage ways. :)

Most lorry drivers have excellent road manner.

As with everything else, some a great drivers and some are morons. Some think that the wagon size gives them the right to do as they please.

Apart from when they try to over take another lorry doing 1mph less than them going up a hill on a duel carriageway. Thats annoying but apart from that most of them are good

Thats a Very very Very Irritating thing about that
They dont deserve to use the outside on a Dual carriage way lol

As for good and bad lorry drivers - i've seen nice ones - I've had the tailgators and the Stupid and Ignorant ones (esp foreign ones - recently seen one or two who have no regard for the road)

its like everything tho - Some spoil it for the other
just have to take it on the chin and keep moving

That broken white line is a give way marking Your supposed to give way to traffic already on the main carriage way yet some retards are hell bent on coming out / cutting you up or threaten to drive into the side of you if you dont let them join even if its not safe to move out or slow to let them enter .....

so from the poll depending on traffic i either match the speed and get in or get in as close as soon as possible in heavy traffic zap straight to the end no one will let you out as they see you as jumping the que that they have sat in for god knows how long
