Hey,

Was coming back from Lincoln on Sunday night and was on a dual carriage way.

I was doing about 80mph, saw some signs for speed cameras and decided to take over the car in the slow lane before slowing down to 70.

I cant remember whether there was a 50mph limit on that part of the dual carriageway or not.

The camera didn't flash, but I imagine it would be one of the digital ones (it was pointing at me)

So when I saw it I slammed the brakes on and got down to around 70.

If the speed limit was 70 do you think I will have gotten away with it?

And if it was 50 and I was doing about 75-80 how much fine/points am I looking at?

if its 20mph over the legal speed limit then could be looking at a more severe fine

police work from a chart that tells them if you are going x amount over the legal speed limit how much of a fine and points you will recieve, im guessing the camaeras will do the same - you can always contest the punishment

The usual speeding offence codes are SP30 and SP70. SP70 applies to breaking the national limit and SP30 applies to all other speeding offences, unless it has changed, which isn't beyond all reason.

As far as penalties are concerned, up to the 1970's fines were issued on a basis of £# /mph over the limit, then they brought in the fixed penalties for anything below 100mph. I heard talk on the news last year that the police wanted it changed back to penalise based amount the limit was broken by, but to the best of my knowledge, this change has not yet been implemented, so it should still be the standard fixed penalty.

On a side note, a mate of mine had 9 points from speeding offences within 3 weeks of passing his bike test at the age of 17 and then got stopped having been caught doing 90 in a 30 zone. He was let off on that occasion, because the police saw the BMW that he was chasing having just cut him up, they were just trying to stop the chase. Much of what happens is still discretionary even with offences caught on camera.

in future just stick 2 speed limit thats what i do if i want to overtake then wait till no speed restrictions etc and dont sppen than longer than nessesary driving 15 yrs n no pints yet :)( will admit have been bad at times but only if motorways are dead ;) )

I thought the camera had to flash regardless of whether its digital or not? & surely they're not allowed to flash in your face

Just out of interest... what happens if you have a foreign driving license? You don't get points in switzerland, just huge fines.

cameras thattake a picture from the back of your car flash, cameras like trevellos take a picture from front they do not flash as it would be dangerous they work on different system.

you should knwo with in 14 days. 70/80 in the 50 will still be 3 points and £60 oh and you have to tell yoru insurance so that may go up a lil aswlel when you next come to renew.

Alex in UK people obey UK law and hence suffer UK penalty. The points can not be applied, because the DVLA is not responsible for the licence, but the fine would remain the same.

I was told many years ago that not all cameras are functional at all times, I'm not sure if that is still the case or even if it was true at the time, but it may be that you were not flashed because the camera wasn't operational at the time.

Yeah i know that bits true, my old man had a run in with a camera on the m62, it flashed at him even though he wasn't speeding, it malfunctioned & said he was doing something stupid like 200mph  in an astra van & apparently gusts of wind can set them off which is nice to know! To cut a long stoy short he ended up talking to a copper to sort it out who said that they rotate which camera's are on at what time.
At least the camera didnt flash at you though, I was thinking the other day how embarrassing that must be, having other drivers looking at you thinking what an idiot you are

i cant remember where i seen ti but vibrations also cause the speed camera to miss read your speed. surely you can argue something about the vibrations causing the reading to be wrong. saying that it may of been The Sun if not the Daily mirror. Anyone else read it?

I think it would need to be pretty serious vibrations to misread your speed! Cameras work on the Doppler Effect. (The Doppler Effect also proved that the universe is constantly expanding). It works something like this - the camera fires infra red radiation at a moving body (in this case, a car) at a known, given frequency. This radiation hits your car and is reflected back to the sensor on the camera. Any body moving at any velocity will cause a change in frequency. The camera then compares the change in frequency to a 'ceiling' change in frequency - that is the change in frequency if the body is moving at the speed limit. The camera can then relate the frequency to the speed. That's why you need to continuously point the camera at a car you suspect is speeding. I know this may not seem that clear to some people but it is a bit late and the old head is not functioning 100% :D

Very few in percentage terms work on Doppler Chaos.

Mainly work on time elasped and distances.

Not that I have to worry now, I speed all the time since I got my GPS with POI. Red lights are easy targets too now since it has red light cameras installed, oh and bus stops so I know where to drive through puddles in advance of the target.
