A record number of security threats and highly targeted Wi-fi attacks are currently attacking enterprise and consumer mobile devices, with devices on the Android platform facing a 400% increase in malware.

The information released by Juniper Networks in a report titled "Malicious Mobile Threats Report 2010/2011" said that cyber criminals have focused their attention to mobile devices.

"In a recent survey of large businesses, we found that nearly 40 percent considered smartphones the device type posing the largest security threat now," said Jeff Wilson, principle analyst, Security at Infonetics Research.
SMS trojans cause the most threat, causing 17% of all reported infections. In addition, the greatest distribution point for mobile malware is application download, yet not many smartphone users use an antivirus solution on their mobile device.

"These findings reflect a perfect storm of users who are either uneducated on or disinterested in security, downloading readily available applications from unknown and unvetted sources in the complete absence of mobile device security solutions," said Dan Hoffman, chief mobile security evangelist at Juniper Networks.

Infected Android apps can hijack your texts
At least 11 Android apps contain malware that is rigged to automatically send text messages from your Google Android smartphone to phone numbers in China.

The apps, which include iBook, iCartoon, iGuide, iCalendar, LoveBaby and Sea Ball, are embedded with malicious code that covertly sends text messages to three different premium-rate numbers without their knowledge or approval.

The texts then sign the victims up for paid subscription services, according to AegisLab, the Taiwanese security firm that discovered the corrupt apps.

It says atleast 11 "sign the victims up for paid subscription services". Thats more than enough to mess up your day.

God knows what the other 399% do/did?

it doesnt say what % that 11 is
so a 400% increase can be a low or high number

SMS trojans cause the most threat, causing 17% of all reported infections.

so is that 11 counting for 17% of all infections?

Well if thats the case i recommend downloading one of the many antivirus programs on the market

only one i would recommend is AVG Android ;)

Just tried it out (i downloaded in months ago BTW) without a sim car in my phone.

downloaded one of the supposedly infected programs... AVG flashed saying Suspicious Program Activity. Malware Suspected. Program Activity Terminated.

iPhone gets no malware (yet) because its all heavily big brothered by Apple Corp. Fine if you want to be mollycoddled and get locked into Apple's money making system.

Android is more open but how long before Google clamp down and it becomes another closed scheme.

Typical press style reporting tbh. They must have a dry patch and are stuck for stories .

And to WhiteSei, That isn't strictly true thanks for the "Jail Braking" that occurs. It's rife with "malware".

Obviously you're a lot more safe if you don't jailbrake but then your also skint through buying apps lol.

A jail broken iPhone is the same as an Android for malware risks. I swapped from iPhone 3G to a HTC Desire HD. I prefer the bigger screen and dont miss the restrictive Apple interface. Battery life is a bit poo but that's the screen.

And it was MUCH less money than a blinged up iPhone 4 that you cant use left handed.

It's most likely the factory ROM tbh. In my experience parts of them can be rather poorly coded My Desire used to last about a day of solid use. I'm using one I found on xdadevelopers and I get two days out of it (constant use) now.

It has built in cpu downclocking when phone is on idle etc.

There has been a 400 per cent increase in malware on Google’s Android platform since the middle of last year and the problem is causing such concern that several Android anti-virus programs have been released.

There are over 200,000 applications on the Android Market today – up from 50,000 a year ago – but the huge growth in the platform has brought with it a rise in malicious apps designed to steal user data.

The issue highlights the flaws in Google’s open, freewheeling approach compared to the tightly controlled nature of Apple’s iTunes App Store.

The 400 per cent increase in malware figure is contained in a new study on mobile security released by Juniper Networks, which found that the application store was the biggest distribution point for malware on mobiles.

A malicious Android app known as DroidDream is believed to have infected about 50,000 Android users before Google began to remove it, with limited success.

“The last 18 months have produced a non-stop barrage of newsworthy threat events and while most had been aimed at traditional desktop computers, hackers are now setting their sights on mobile devices,” said Jeff Wilson, principle analyst at Infonetics Research.

Nice, nokia ditch a working os, apple are crap, android is having trouble and for windows - well you might as well stop dreaming.

I wouldnt call Symbian a working OS... :p

Apple isnt crap, the OS works well an is easy and intuative to use. Its apple themselves people have the issue with. If iOS4 was ran on a different manufacturer then it would be much better. If jailbroke then is suspetable to any virus that other phones are

Androids opensource i love personally. My HTC Desire runs MIUI not Sense. much faster (actually looks like iOS...) because of Googles approarch it made it open for attack, we knew this from the start... But so did antivirus companies. thats why AVG and others have made free versions for devices :worship:

As for windows. The os is growing, the layover of the tiles is a good concept. it just needs the apps. but the flaw is Windows itself. WP7 is as open to virus's as W7 itself. Good Luck...

I'm not sure what you did to sort out the factory ROM. Do I need to download a some new software? Can you point me in the right direction.

The problem is people downloading pirated apps, if there is a paid for app - and then a free version of it, but from a different developer.. then chances are there is something dodgy going on.

This isn't really possible since ANY app has to listed it's permissions at install time, if you install a live wallpaper or the like and it states that it needs access to the SMS API then that should ring alarm bells.

I like my Android phone and really do prefer it to the iPhone I used to have. OK so its popular with the dodgy crowd, but I can live with an antivirus just to keep out of AppleCorps watchful nannying.
