How do these things work?

I've been told that if the overhead gantrys are off then so are the cameras> this isn't an excuse to abuse the limit, but i got flashed by one yesterday on a gantry which was off :(
Best bit was i was doing 100 by accident (yeah right how do u do 100 by accident) and i slammed on my brakes but just i did i got flashed. I never do more than 85 on the M25 normally for this very reason> just the one time i'm distracted and i go way over limit i get caught, its stupid. Especially since i'd sat at 40 all the way through the roadworks while cars blasted past me.
I'm not trying to excuse myself but cameras suck (n)

I feel dirty> just waiting for the letter to come throught the post.

Bummer... (n)

I have a mate who commutes from Croydon to Milton Keynes quite a bit and he has never had any trouble from the cameras when they are off... He drives an Integra Type R and always cruises at higher speeds !!

Fingers crossed on this one !!

Heard on the news that the government plan to make radar detecters (snoopers etc) illegal and they could be from early next year.

I previously thought that there were no speed cameras on the motorways - I know someone always speeding on the M1 (J3-23) daily and never gets a ticket or anything. To be honest I'd like there to be loads of them - if they were set at 85 or something motorways would be a lot safer I reckon.

Of course there are speed cameras on the motorways?! You never seen white vans parked up on bridges - or is this only Northamptonshire, which would cover M1 J15 to J18.....

I too heard about the radar thing being made illegal. GPS will still be ok [a la Road Angel for example] - but some of these GPS also have radar attachments as well, interesting. They make road safety SAFER, imo, but the ROAD SAFETY ACT wants to ban them - ooh, less revenue/hidden taxation for motorists......funny that.....

They propose to stop the use of detectors that actually pick up the signal from the gun/camera.

However, GPS ones will be ok.

100mph means a court appearance, and probably loss of licence :(

Anything over 98 and the judge is supposed to give a ban (and does in the vast majority of cases). The M25 camera's are constantly on, whether the gantry's are showing a speed limit or not. I'm not sure if the camera's are hooked directly up to the computer system or are manual (i.e film type). If there the film type, then being flashed doesn't mean you get a ticket, as it may well be out of film, although if it is connected to the computer system there is no escape. The M25 can be a dangerous road, espicially at congested times and thats why theres so many camera's on it. The M1 is hardly ever policed properly, and its probably just as bad as the M25. Good luck mate

The cameras on the M25 are on all the time and a lot are digital now as well. If you were really doing 100mph rather than an indicated 100mph you will certainly face a ban. If you have a good reason, it may only be a few weeks rather the normal 1 year.

Let us know what happens in any case. Yes I know there are vans on bridges sometimes but I've never seen a fixed camera.

Also, the lines on the road do not necessarily mean cameras. On the A12 there are lines everywhere but no fixed cameras at all - I think they might be left over from previous temporary cameras? (i.e. during roadworks)

I think there are two type on the motorway, if you drive around the M25 between the M3 & M4 junctions there are cameras at pretty much every other gantry for all three lanes. They are set for the standard 70mph and also the variable speed limits when the signs are on. Further round the M25 are the new digital averaging cameras which are virtually impossible to avoid. They read you number plate and then read it again further on, your speed is then averaged for the distance covered. If it is over the threshold, then you get an automatic ticket. There is no point detecting the cameras because it doesn't matter of you slow down in front of them, it is the average speed which counts.

How comes when I'm on the M25 then doing 65-75 in the middle or inside lane and there are people going past at about 90+

They can't all get tickets else they wouldn't do it! But I rarely go round the M4 side.

The majority are around the M3-M4 corridor as it is the busiest section. The new cameras are further round and are currently being evaluated I think before they expand them.

Unlucky, I know people who regularly get flashed and don't ever get tickets (bastards), so you should be ok. Also they still have to take two photos don't they? So 1 flash is ok?

I am astounded you managed to go so fast, from my limited experience of the M25 I was amused at the variable speed limits which suggested a maximum speed of 40mph.....while the traffic pottered along at 20mph-ish.

I don't understand this argument over speed cameras and hidden taxation - if you're speeding and you get caught then tough luck, shouldn't have been speeding (yes, that does go for me too, I know I risk my licence every day). Am I missing something here?
