in the fast lane driving back from stafford today on the m6 and some nutter in a white van undertakes me (he'd just joined from a slip road) and cuts into the gap that'd id left in front of me. The gap was imo too close even before he barged his way into it. I could see traffic ahead braking, so began slowing down - then saw the middle lane was very very clear, and when the fast lane slows and the middle is free then i have no quarms joining it and undertaking everyone (considering its not an illgeal manouver). I checked my mirror, indicated and was about to pull out - checked my blind spot (still braking the avoid hitting the back of the white van) and saw another car flying past me - blocking me into the lane. I swore, and then looked back forward and the van had hankered on his brakes to create a gap in front of him. I hit my brakes, momentairly locking my front wheels as the van went from 60 to around 20 as fast as he could. I checked my blind spot again and pulled out round him and saw he'd created a gap about 10 car lengths in front of him. I mean what the fcuk was he playing at? I'm 99% sure that if i had standard brakes i would've hit the back of him.

I suppose it is kinda my fault, shoulda kept my eyes forward then i wouldnt have had to brake quite so suddenly.

Then coming along the NSL roads near home, come round a corner and theres a gert big mecr sprinter van doing a flippin U turn in the middle of the road. I was only doing an indicated 50, and still nearly hit it.

argh. idiots.

I went onto the Mancunion way yesterday to go up to the Lowry with friends. I joined it near UMIST thinking there to be a slip road (it looks like it!) Next thing I know it's basically just a 10m long slip road and I am doing 45mph. It was a panicing moment I tell you as I hit the brakes and pulled in cm behind a car just before I hit the barrier. No idea how youi're supposed to take that joining yet, it looks like a slip road, have a lengthto build up your speed etc. Crazy! The left lane then immediately goes off the 'motorway' so you have to switch lanes before the barrier. Stupid design!

Sorry Arc, some weird people out on the road (I guess I was one of those at this joining yesterday to the guy who didn't move over to let me on)

If you think main roads are dangerous, yesterday I was parked in a quiet residential road (cul de sac) when somebody in a drive opposite reversed out straight into the side of our Volvo. I only new it had happened because the alarm on the car went off so I went to check.

It has caused about £600 of damage as I now need a new wing, respray of the side and new indicator repeater. At first he wanted to do a cash repair until he found out how much it was, so it is now going through insurance.

unfortunately arc the road traffic act 1998 sec 3 sees it another way, and a following video equipped traffic car would be within it's rights to issue you with a ticket for driving without due care and attention, worth bearing in mind....

I thought you could only pass cars if the other lane is slower, but you can't swap lanes and undertake.

i.e if you are in lane 2 and lane 3 slows you can continue in lane 2 passing the lane 3 cars but you can't keep changing lanes to try and get ahead.

When I was in Canada it was strange when cars start overtaking in any lane.

it's basically "driving without due care and attention"
and while the white van man committed the offence, and possibly dangerous driving, by cutting across lanes at speed to take up position in front of arc, arc himself also committed an offence by pulling to the left and going past the van...

I know the law says you can undertake when in heavy traffic, but I think they are talking about when people are almost at a standstill in a traffic jam rather than when you're doing 60mph and there happens to be a lot of traffic.

That's what I always thought anyway.

Arc you shouldn't have confessed on a public forum to undertaking, you will get a knock on the door now.

Best make a run for it :).

its not undertaking really. Unlucky, doesn't take much for a situation like that to occur, atleast you were on the ball, and thinking about the traffic ahead, a lesser driver may have had an accident... You got some nice grooved disks and uprated servo on your cinq?

got 6 groove disc and fast road pads

i did pass him at low speed, i'd braked from 60mph! and anyway, if theres a lane free and someone hogging the one to the right - expect to be undertaken, i'm fed up with pricks on the m'ways.

*arc legs it and goes into hiding*

You were lucky arc. My poor baby is in the compound of my ma's work which is a accident repair centre  About 7.45 tonight i indicated to turn right into the Spar car park, looked and i saw nothing so pulled across next thing i know i see some legs heading past my windscreen and over my roof. I stop, get out of my car and theres a moterbike rider lying in the middle of the road. This experiance was the most scariest of my life. I looked at him lying motionless in the middle off the road and i thought he was dead... luckily he was carted off to hospital with bruises and a couple of broken bones as far as i know nothing worse. I'm fine i was just really shaken it was scary.

oh dear. Hope you are okay mate. I bet ya legs turned to jelly.

Centos get v.little respect on the road esp if you are a male driving. It is as though I should know better to not drive this car or something. When my friend drives Custard, everyone is generally polite wheras I have to fight to get anywhere and I know quite a few mates male and female that agree that this happens.

jelly is an understatement. I know what your saying about little respect for cento's, but earlier on my family were trying to cheer me up saying things like if my car gets rit off (which it shouldnt do) or once i get it repaired and should sell it and join the sad ranks of festa, corsa or nova drivers and then i realised i wouldnt sell that car for a long time whatever happens and if it comes to writtin it off i will get another sei sporting and it will be yellow... i dont care what people say and if BB's slag them... I love that car and she's done me proud. :)

If it's any hep Arc I would have done the same and bent the law to its limits. I often undertake on motorways when the traffic is clogging the fast lane but the slow lane is clear, always terrified some idiot won't check their mirrors and plough into the side of me but if they've been driving along in the middle lane for the last 20 miles, chances of them moving across now are slim to zero.......

I have had no stupid driver incidents today, I would just like to know how someone can drive along a 60mph limit road at 30-40mph (NOT in the snow!)

Passed an 02 reg 3 series BMW doing 35 in a 60 limit single carriageway this morning - still drunk maybe?

Also passed 2 cars and 1 van on an almost deserted stretch of 3 lane A road - they were, of course, all in the middle lane about 1/4 mile apart from each other. If they can't use the left lane when there's no other traffic then God help us when they're out in rush hour. Gibbons.

That was the new 30 zone :D

They have done that one the local town bypass Alex - downgraded it from a 60 limit to a 50 limit. All because blind tossers pull out of the side roads when they can clearly see a car heading towards them, leading to many near misses and a few bumps. Like it's going to stop people doing 80 along it anyway (no comment!).
