I recent posted a wanted ad for a Punto HGT in the wanted section of the classifieds.

Today, I recieved an email direct to my yahoo email from someone called Tim Mayor, this is how it goes.

The first one.

I saw your Wanted Ad so I decided to write you as I have the item(s)
in stock. Get back to me ASAP if you are still interested. What's your
cell # ?

Thanks,

Name: Tim Mayor

I replied

I am still looking for a Punto HGT

And I got another email saying this.

Hello Simon,

Thanks for the mail, i have the requested items in a mint condition
and am asking a 140$USD for it, As i can ship via UPS on a three
working days to you, and will accept payment via Western union. Whats
your complete shipping address? so i can inquire for the postage to
you. Am located in Ireland.

Kind Regards,

Tim.

I twigged it as a scam at that point so I sent one saying, can you send me some images of the item.

I have yet to have another reply..

I didn't reaslie that Ireland used US Dollars, a car is only worth $140 and that UPS could ship it from Ireland.

A few months ago my son was begging me for a Staffie puppy. I put a wanted ad on Gumtree. I got a response saying this person had a dog called Kellie and wanted to know all about me and if we had a decent home for her. Long list of questions.

I ignored the questions and replied asking where this person was located and repeated what I had put in the ad, that I would expect to see the pup WITH the mother, in the place where they lived.

The response I got was an offer for me to see the puppys mother which was located in the Republic of Cameroon, and - wait for it - if I couldnt make the trip there to see it then they would SEND me the mother so I could look at her and send her back. But obviously there would be an upfront admin charge of £50 for shipping.

I dont think its a bad thing to publiscise that scammers use the classifieds. I dont think it reflects badly on ff, as they use everything from autotrader to e-bay. By making it publically aware HOPEFULLY people will take more care and carry out checks etc as others have suggested rather than actually falling victim to these scams.

Well I just got another email, aparently he cannot send me any pictures as He is having technical difficulties, but he still want my address :D

Hopefully I have taken up some of his valuable scamming time, but it is now time for me to go quiet on the emails and report his address as spam.

I also think it is a good idea to make people aware that scammers use the classifieds. I know there is often a tendency to let your guard down a bit when selling or buying items from a forum that you visit regularly compared to when selling on ebay/autotrader etc...

I get about ten of those emails a day, when all the money actually reaches my bank account Ill buy you all a new Fiat, whichever one you want - just dont list yours on ebay just yet ok?

ive had them a few times for things ive put up in wanted ads. all are obvious really. and even if they are not i wouldnt send money(monies) to someone unless they where active members on here.

Hello!

I am Captain Hale, an Intelligence officer in Iraq on a Joint Monitoring and
Peace-keeping mission in Baghdad-Iraq.I have a proposition for you.On the 15th
day of November 2009, we were alerted on the sudden presence of some Shi'a
militias camping in a suburb not too far from kirkuk here in Iraq .

In the ensuing gun duel with them,twenty-six (26) were killed ,(3) were
seriously injured and the remaining militias ran away. Unfortunately, I lost
some of my men in the process of interrogating the injured insurgents, they
confessed being rebels for Muqtada al-Sadr and took us to a cave in Karbala
where we recovered two Boxes, one containing Ammunition and the other was filled
with money in United States Currency.

We found out that the funds discovered in the cave totals USD6.2 million and
have been able to safely keep it while looking for someone that will help us
receive the fund until we are redeployed from Iraq.

As serving Military officer's,we can not be parading such amount hence the need
to get someone that will receive the fund on our behalf until our assignment in
Iraq is concluded. As an intelligence officer, I have a 100% authentic means of
transferring the money to you legally and I just need your acceptance and
everything will be done.

Where we are now in Iraq, we can only communicate through our military
communication facilities and all calls are monitored and so the best way of
communicating will be via email. For your efforts in this transaction, you shall
receive 40% of the entire amount and if you are interested in assisting us, the
following information will enable us expedite action.

YOUR FULL NAME..............
YOUR FULL ADDRESS....................
YOUR OCCUPATION........................
YOUR DIRECT TELEPHONE NUMBER.........

It is of paramount importance that you keep the details of this transaction to
yourself. Utmost confidentiality and secrecy are what is needed from you in
order to successfully complete the transfer of the fund from Iraq to you in your
country of residence. However,If you are not interested,do not reply and please
delete this message, but if you are interested simply fill in the details above
and will put you to our contact.Kindly forward your reply to my private email:

Kind Regards,
