from peterborough.. was thinking A1M, A14 most of the way then M11.

As far as Im aware there are no roadworks in the Essex stretch of the M11 towards Stanstead.
May not be of great use to you but in Scotland http://trafficscotland.org/ gives excellent information for motorways, A roads and even some more minor works. Gives details of planned works and updates on emergency repairs and accidents.
