think hard can you think of a time you have not checked your blind spot
i normally just look in mirror for a mo i have found and check about 70% of time
but it is checked as i put seat belt on

Strictly speaking you are supposed to allow enough space between you and the car you are passing for a door to be opened safely. Nuts I know, but that's the rule.

I passed a car - woman driver - on a busy narrow street with the driver's door wide open while she was round the other side faffing with a baby seat thing and laughing with her friend at the same time. Completely oblivious to the fact that there was anyone else on the planet but her. Quite common though, sadly.

I always check one way or another. If I haven't been watching what's coming up on the outside, I'll always look over my shoulder. I have to confess that I once didn't do this and nearly forced someone into a barrier.

Since that time several years ago, as it sh!t the life out of me, I have always looked.

if you constantly check in your mirrors like you are supposed too, then you know if there was a car in a mirror and its now not there or over took, it must be in your blind spot

Exactly what I do. Always checking mirrors so no real need for blindspot checks. Although I do check when moving off.

I check my mirrors constantly too to get an awareness of positioning of other cars on the road, but even when doing 100 on the M61, there's always a Ferrari will come up behind you doing 150. If it hasn't happened to you yet, it will one day ;)

I nearly failed my test for not checking my blind spot...for some reason I stopped...if I hadn't would have gone into the car that was driving past!

Since becoming a Special I check my blind spot and mirrors every few minutes...wish others would...amount of times we've been stuck behind someone on a blue light run who hasn't seen us is unbelieveable.

Yes, being a cycle person i'm conditioned to perform the "lifesaver" anyway so don't even have to think about it. Have had to tell GF who is learning to drive off for not doing it until she nearly wrapped us round a focus in her blind spot and has been diligent since!

My driving instructor was very hot on checking blind spots, and the habit has stuck with me. I also did the IAM course and exam which reinforced it. I spend a lot of time watching my mirrors so it's rare that something comes as a surprise to me, but it only takes one off-day when you're about to put on the indicator and swing out into the overtaking lane THEN you check your blind spot and see something there that you weren't expecting to scare the crap out of you and remind you why it's always a good idea to have that last look... just in case!

I don't have that problem - I drive a diesel Vectra so I can't overtake anything anyway :p

(very good point though)

being a biker before i was a driver, "life savers" were always drilled in. Just natural to look, i cant not look!!

Even do it when walking/riding the horse in the filed etc etc
