The (Manchester) smog`
I always leave a big gap behind dirty vehicles’ black clouds to save my engine’s breathing and me. I reckon all busses, taxis, lorries and vans should be forced to have Cat converters fitted and follow tight pollution levels like my UNO. Why should my cat converter have to remove their filth from the air?

Why should the big companies like (for example) Stagecoach and FIRST be allowed to make millions from clapped out ancient busses? They should also pay for my next replacement cat as compensation, along with some other penalties to undo the damage they have already caused to the environment like planting forests.

I reckon they would threaten to put up their fairs (again) to scare their customers into pressuring the government to retreat, while their shareholders (the people making money out of destruction) remain in pocket.

What do you reckon, the bigger the company, the tighter the emission level?

Sorry for the green rant, but I hate to think I am paying the extra to be on the road (not catching colds and bugs in public transport), and paying for a Cat Converter to remove their by-product as the laws are looser for them. This is wrong!!!!!!!!!!

Louie Bee.

just a quick not to say all non uno topics such as this should be posted in the lesuire lounge :) The uno moderator will move it when he comes online :)

on the topic - i hate driving in manchester anyway - by the sheer volume of impatiant drivers and it is poorly signed also i had to contend with sucidal christmas shoppers last week

I mucn prefer getting the tram where possible :)

Come to think of it this also could apply to Diesel trains.

The UK government are trying to sneak in a complete white elephant chipped ID card, which far too many people will have access to your information.

They are scarring people with the old terrorism chestnut claming it will make the UK safer – yer right – makes things easier for em’ as these chips have already been cracked on the new “safer” “Chip and Pin” credit cards.

Chip and pin BTW is a way for credit card companies to get to you when you are vulnerable. I never have known my credit cards pin numbers, as it is well more costly to draw cash at an ATM, at a higher APR %. Having to know my pin means extra temptation, and if I was abducted, and my card pin number extracted from me, my signature would not even need to be forged – more temptation for serious criminals. – What a blag.

The other reason for these cards is to create loads of new jobs. Pass a pollution law for these companies, set up an agency of inspectors, which would create loads of jobs and pay for its self through an industry stealth tax perhaps. – Anything but forcing everyone to pay about £80 for a useless piece of plastic no one really wants or needs.

Rant Rant…

Yes sammiboo,

I probably should not be posting this stuff hear but I am still learning – Sorry.

The electric tram is much better, but I am not on The line (yet…)

When I moved to Safford, I hated driving, as the signs are useless. I must have driven a few hundred miles working it out. The City centre changes every week (more or less) and the A-Z dose not show one ways or no entries…

Those X-mass shoppers are lethal. Give you evils, loads of horn, and cut you up for keeping out boxed junctions when the exit root is well blocked.

These new inspectors could also sort them out – perhaps if the government spent a little more of my road tax on things linked to roads and traffic… or perhaps a tax on the retail industry for creating the traffic and need to overspend (through brain rotting adds on tv) in the first place……..

Regards.

And the catapult?

Getting back to the original thread, do you realise how much it would cost to do such a thing? The money would be better spent elsewhere and in the future.

Aren't most modern diesels actually cleaner than petrol engines?

re: the ID Card, I have dual nationality status with Hong Kong, which has had such an ID card for years... it hasn't caused a problem for me or for anyone i know with the card.
Its very much a great thing for convience as it can be used for other things, like a library card, pre-payment card etc... most recent example is at the airport over there... i swipe the card at the turnstyle, put my thumb on the biometric reader and thats it... i don't have to queue for immigration or for anyone to check my details out. i'd be in and out of the airport within 10 mins. though there are armed police around should something happen...

re: chip and pin, its not just credit cards that use chip and pin. and every credit card i know charges 2% for cash withdrawals.
i suppose its one thing i never understood... why draw cash using a debit card when u can just use your debit card in a shop.

The signs in todmoden are farrr worse... :p

Hi all,
Helz,
No one is forcing me to stay in Manc – but even if I moved, the busses would be filthy where ever I go?

Pghstochaj,
Yes you’re right, but Labour are into stealth and spend at the moment. Look at he amount going on the through the NHS to the private sector at the moment to cut waiting lists. I’m not saying that’s bad, far from it, but I am not into being a chip number, which will never be questioned, and will fall into the wrong hands. No computer is secure – soon your data will be for sale on the black market, well it is already (e.g. you get a quote for double glassing, then your phone becomes a telesales hotline for the rest), but more of it. Labour are looking to make some more share holders rich with my tax (while creating jobs).

Dave, Ill have to look into Trafford Counsil’s hotline.

RedSei Most busses round hear after about 6 months exhale big black clouds. The drivers are less respectful than in Hong Kong I imagine, and max out the busses all day. Most busses are at lease 10 years old, so modern doesn’t come into it.

I very occasionally like / need cash when it’s the bank says NO (student days). There are some very vulnerable people out there, some of which don’t understand credit cards. I used to listen (at work for associates – now city bank) to people claim they never signed that agreement (for the fit girl) in the airport, when they received the card upon return from holiday to find a new credit card on their door mat), and others that tried paying the bill with a cheque from that credit card.

I Guess I am a bit of a technophobe sometimes. I don’t like guns, police with no arms or hands are more scary though.

I'm in a predicament in this thread. I hate the namby pamby greens. I also hate buses. Bus lanes are my pet hate, along with cyclists.

The greens are anti-car, hence my hate. Anyone that tries to infringe upon my right to go wherever I want whenever I want in my car, which is bought, paid for and taxed to the hilt can suck my.... You get the idea. Car manufacturers will, in their own time, eventually come up with a workable alternative to the internal combustion engine. No doubt it will boring to drive, it will probably be loaded with safety devices and so on. That will be a sad day. Life will have lost a bit of fun. Fun is a dirty word these days. The government don't want us to have fun. IMO they are actively legislating against it.

Cyclists, I don't trust them. Obviously some people are forced to cycle, and use public transport, due to financial constraints. It's the ones that choose to cycle I don't trust. I feel that cyclists shouldn't be allowed on the road unless they have passed a cycling proficiency test, have reg plates on their bike and be taxed to use public roads. They should also have insurance. What happens if a cyclist damages my car? They ride on regardless. I have no comeback.

Buses, again the transport of the poor. Where is the logic in devoting lanes to people that don't pay for them? We, the motorists pay for the road system. Who in their wisdom decided that people that don't contribute to the payment of the roads should get a whole lane dedicated to them during the busiest times of the day. This is moronic. Admittedly some people choose to leave the car behind and get the bus. Don't trust these people. Anyone has chooses to take a bus and thereby take a chance by sitting beside a complete rather than having the comfort of their own car can only be mentally unhinged.

In summary. Those that don't own a car should have a public transport system provided, but it shouldn't take presidence over the car driving majority. We pay for the roads after all...

Regarding id cards. No other democracy in the world has yet to force it's citizens into a system such as this. This Labour Government is dangerous. They promote nanny state policies, they won't be happy until they have a say in every aspect of our lives.

However, many people have voluntarily provided more information than they can imagine. Just look at Tescos Clubcard. Did you know that Tescos actively update and profile customers based on what they buy. They know what you have for breakfast, they know what you wipe your bum with, they know more than they should...

Invasion of privacy is creeping in. Soon it will be legally required invasion of privacy.

I'm not particularly religious, but if anyone has read Revelations from the bible they will know about the mark of the number of the beast. IMO the beast is democracy. We won't be able to buy things without id, we won't be able to sell without id. We're f*cked. We just don't know it yet...

Steve, that's wrong I do believe, plenty of countries on the continent have I.D cards, for example, in Poland I was advised heavily to ALWAYS carry my passport.

The thing is with the loyalty cards, the information is totally useless, there's too much of it too.

I can't be bothered to do a huge reply but just want to question one of your points Steve:

You say you like freedom, fun etc. right? So why do you say I need to tax (etc.) my bike? Surely one of the best things about a bike is that anybody who can afford one - for say £30+ second hand can just jump on one and go up to the shops without any problems like tax/insurance whether you're 5 or 95. You're being majorly hypocritical IMO (not just comments here but the way I know you) saying that another aspect of our lives should be more tightly controlled. Just remember most cyclists are good :) Along with buses, they mean that the roads are cleary for somebody like you!

Steve C, you are so right! Why cant others see what this government is doing to the country, its so sad.
Re cyclists, they are a blood* pain, everyday they run red lights, ride up pavements thus upsetting pedestrians, regularly they come up the inside of your car and clip the mirror. Heaven help you if you tell them off, its like you are a devil or something. There should be seperate lanes for them, away from roads and pavements and they should have some form of ID like a reg.plate. Also, they can take their bikes free on our trains, and now they have some time restrictions they get all tearful on us at work. This applies to all cyclists, there is something mentally wrong with someone who wants to wear lycra and a silly hat, while using all there energy to get someplace... and a lot of them are greens.

Sorry for being a cyclist then nuova!

I know plenty of cyclists who don't run reds. However, I have to say I sometimes am forced onto the pavement waiting at the lights, why? Because 1 car has decided they want to sit a ft away from the kerb when they have just overtaken me, where as everybody else is leaving room for me to go passed. That's just selfish in traffic jams as I either have to overtake on the outside (more dangerous) or go around the single car. If the car is a lorry/bus/coach I don't overtake unless I know they won't have to get passed me again for some time (It must be difficult enough driving one, nevermind overtaking the same bike 15x over in a mile).

SO far on my bike i have done one stupid thing (went infront of a car when I didn't realise my speed wasn't as high as the car relatively, this led to them having to brake and I know if I had been in the car I would have been pissed off slightly), however, I have had 10s of stupid things done to me as a cyclist so far this year, obviously as a cyclist that doesn't matter, it's only poor Paul on a bike!

BTW, the worst thing a cyclist wants to do is clip your mirror, the mirror doesn't travel in that direction! Hence all you get is a nasty hit and probably thrown off your bike....

Apology accepted Paul, but... you used to have a car, however my theory is that other people speeding and generally rebelling on the roads has unhinged you mentally, hence my point about cyclists being unstable up top!
BTW, pleeeese take my posts with a pinch of salt, I am old and therefore still have non PC points of view and that rare form of human emotion in Labours nanny state, a twisted sense of humour!
