Hmm, perhaps driving off was the wrong thing to do... but come on... the crowd is standing right next to the track... there is no room for error.

Standing on the outside of corners is plain stoopit.

In the drivers defence, he probably didn't see the ones flying through the air, In the group B days with spectators all over the roads drivers always said that all that is out there are trees and bushes. If you ever consider they are people, then you couldn't do it.

That wasn't the fault of the crowd being beside the road.
That was a hideous acident though! hate to think how many people were seroiusly injured or killed there!

I've seen other things like that though, some guy got taken out by a subaru in i think 1999, but he was standing on the racing line throught the corner taking photos! NICE ONE ASS! He got away with just a broken leg, and the subaru with a broken front bumper.

Motorsport can be dangerous> especially if u stand infront of the cars.

That's seriously nasty

This is going to sound very harsh, but I think they were morons for standing there although obviously they didn't deserve to have a car plough through them.
I'm not entirely surprised that the driver drove away; it wasn't his fault that there were spectators stood on the outside on a high-speed corner on a wet and slippery course. You've got to expect that cars will come off on a corner like that and hence keep out of the way. If you were the bloke driving that car, would YOU want to stick around??

The desire to get to the end of a stage, even with the car in bits, is quite overwhelming. OK, this is a slightly different situation, but I still think that the crew would be unaware of the extent of the injuries.

Driving away IMO is unbelievably cruel. The people he could have killed could have been children just standing where everybody else was or people who failed to see the danger of their position. I mean it wasn't a very unusual spot to stand from when I see rallies on TV....

He obviously didn't realise the scale of what he had done.

Hmm, I don't think that they could have been in much doubt considering there were bodies flying everywhere. But I don't think they drove off to finish, I think they just wanted to get out of there before someone dragged them out of the car and battered them.

At the end of the day, rally drivers are driving to the absolute limits to get the best times, as a result they sometimes crash. If people are stood in the place they crash, the driver can't be held accountable, you may as well put speed limits where the spectators are standing. If anyone is accountable it is the rally organisers for not ensuring the safety of spectators by only letting them view the rally from safe locations, like their living room in front of the TV.
