At the end of the day, rally drivers are driving to the absolute limits to get the best times, as a result they sometimes crash. If people are stood in the place they crash, the driver can't be held accountable, you may as well put speed limits where the spectators are standing. If anyone is accountable it is the rally organisers for not ensuring the safety of spectators by only letting them view the rally from safe locations, like their living room in front of the TV.

Well said that man. :D

I agree that the race organisers should be required to keep the people safely away from cars, however, you have to be mad to drive off.

What I meant is, not scale as in bodies flying everywhere but as in it hadn't hit home what had happened.

I can see that the driver could have been in shock and acted irrationally as a result, but I wonder what he would have done if the people hadn't got out of his way when he tried to drive off.

A far as the driver is concerned he will have had the note for the next corner already and I am sure he will not have seen the spectators flying. The concentration on a stage has to be experienced to be believed. If you think you are trying hard on a public road, you haven't even got halfway there.

Cheers

I don't care about all that and I'm not even saying it was the driver's fault but someone was killed for Christ's sake there's no excuse for just driving off.

And how could he have not seen all those bodies flying?! How did he think he had been stopped?

Sorry I just watched it again, no way did he not know what he had done unless he was drunk! He sat there for at least 10 seconds and people were running towards everybody else to help.

Well, I was at a rally on saturday..

There are warnings everywhere about the danger of the sport, and that neither the MSA or the rally organisers can be held responsible for death or injury due to flying cars...

Plus, there were well defined areas for spectators to watch away from the track, but yu were given free roam to an extent- with the exceptions of on hill crests and on corners!

Didn't see this the other day as I uninstalled my Flash Player.

Oh dear, I thought I had seen that before, there's another with some Toyota hitting someone in a rally doing the internet rounds.

Tom, didn't see your post.

Signs like that are irrelevant and worthless UNLESS they are backed up by sufficient enforcement. Just like a sign at work saying "wear your helmet" for example isn't enough to satisfy the HSE - it has to be enforced.

I know it does sound harsh, but having rallied for years, I know what Rallycinq means.
a) They should NOT have been on the outside of a bend. Everywhere you go there are signs, and everyone with half a bit of wit knows it is the worst place to stand. Yet look at Corsica of old, for example, to see spectator stupidity at it's finest.
b) There are many times when you do go off and there seems to be debris everywhere and when the dust settles you realise everyone is pushing you back onto the road to carry on. You get into a mindset about it. The spectators got out of his way because they probably didn't realise anyone was badly hurt.
c) No way would he have known he had killed somebody. The news report didn't say killed instantly, the person may have died later in hospital, but that wouldn't be such dramatic news.
d) The crew may well have thought it would be best to get out of there, either in the interests of self-preservation, or maybe even to get to the nearest Rescue/ambulance crew to let them know.

Just an opinion. And it IS an old film after all, some of you will only have been 3 or 4 when it happened...
