Hi Folks
I am planning on buying a s/h punto soon;
can anyone tell me what is the purpose of the red key, I have been told if you lose it you need a new E.M.S., is this the only key and do you need to use the key at all times,is it fitted as standard on certain models, or whas it an optional extra. A lot of questions I know but some answers would be great

Hi there

Make sure you get the red key with a Punto if it is a Mark 1 Punto you are after (red keys on these from 1995-1999). The Mk2 Puntos (Late 1999-date) don't have the red key.

The purpose of the red key is to program the two blue keys with codes for the immobiliser and to occasionally open up the ECU for diagnostics (or so I'm told on that point).

You do not use this red key on a day to day basis. Keep it in a safe place and use the blue keys. If you do lose this red key and you dont know anyone who can re-program the ECU or whatever, you are looking at a new ECU, ignition and locks which from Fiat is a nigh-on four figure price.

In short, make sure you get the red key with your Mark 1 Punto (if it's a new-shape Punto ignore all the above), never use it and keep it in a safe place.

Hope this helps.
