i wonder if they could actually get a clamp on my car - i think its too low to the ground with not enough gap round the arches

lol, depends on the clamp, my school couldn't do mine :p

i think this is a step forward though, as it says it should stop the cowboys......

Hehehe...

I was given a crash course in vehicle de-immobilisation by LUMC (V8) The other day, basically how to remove a clamped wheel and clamp from the car, take aforementioned clamp off wheel, place in security office and drive off...'nuff said.

Although, myself being one of only about 10 people on campus that dont flout the parking laws, it was purely for educational purposes!

Apparently on private roads, any person can start wheel clamping with the permission of the owner. Also these people can charge what ever fee they feel is suitable. Just seems like a legal method of stealing peoples' money. Although they do need to display signs, which must be clearly visable, they always manage to catch people out.

EDIT: Tom plz share with us!

I guess it's better than any cowboys doing it. All this at a similar time as a few well known and well thought of unis losing their chemistry depts and Oxford's chem dept. in huge money difficulties...it's an odd world!

They covered this on Fifth Gear to some extent. They mentioned that there was legislation coming in to control clamping, but the Fifth Gear team said they would be likely to just move on to the next unlegislated field, can't remember which one they suggested now.

My mate got clamped in his Mini (an in the shop for 2 minutes, they were hiding round the corner situation...) and they said he had to pay a £90 release fee.:(

His Mini had about 2 hours MOT left and was a complete rot box, so he told them 'you can f*ckin keep it', took his tools out the back, and walked home. (y)

i think im gonna buy a wheel clamp and clamp my own car. leave a letter to my self in the window. and ill park where i like then.

That's not a bad idea (y) I also want to clamp the stupid b*tch who keeps blocking our drive with her poxy Fiesta

Doesn't matter if I clamp her in as I only keep the Capri in the drive and it hardly ever gets used. But, if I kept the Capri out until she parked, then it would actually be quite easy to drag the Fester out of the way using a bit of rope and the Capri's towbar ;)

Well, theres multiple methods, but its based on the fact that the wheelclamps at uni are fairly easy to exploit (I understand).

Method one -Alloy Wheels

1. remove valve cap and deflate tyre on affected wheel (improvise!)
2. Raise wheel off the ground using the car jack
3. Wrench wheel clamp off wheel (shouldnt be that hard)
4. Remove wheel and swap for spare
5. See "all"

Method Two - steel wheels

1. lever off wheel trim progressively around rim, and remove from wheel.
2. get extension bar from boot, with right socket on (or nick the necessaries from the Engineering dept), and undo wheel nuts.
3. Raise car on jack
4. Remove nuts from wheel (should be adequate space to do so)
5.Swap for spare
6. See "All"

All Methods

1. Leave carpark driving on spare wheel. Head for petrol station
2. Deflate clamped wheel, pull clamp away from wheel. Put clamp in boot
3. Reinflate deflated wheel, put back in car, put spare back in correct place.
4. Drive back to carpark, stop outside security \ clampers office, take clamp inside and give to clamper (service with a smile ;))

I have heard this working at uni, and at numerous carparks in Manchester. The key is, not to damage the clamp (before and after piccys are useful, if yuve got a cameraphone!). I cant be held responsible for your misendevour though!!

You are also legally within your rights to hand in the clamp to ANY (;) ) police station as lost property. I'd recommend one in another county...
