looks like a nice bike (and i don't like motorbikes generally), but haven't got a clue sorry. i'm guessing its for the plate. you need to look for regulations for motorbikes MoT wise for that age, and try finding a source of spare parts.

Ta, it is indeed for the plate.

Needs to have been MOTed in last 12 months or have current MOT, and has to be sorned for no more that 12 months, or taxed.

Parts look ok availability wise. Googled the bike and it look nice in its hay day. Not that I know much about them

Just got to see if dad's acient driving license covers him on it, as I've a bit of a dodgy plan

item number 180382466535

cheers.

if you're wanting to do it up for an mot to transfer the plate, seriously forget that!

doing it up to get it on the road can bring all sorts of hidden costs, i'd mainly worry about the electrics, silly little things like 1 light not working can be a bugger to sort out.

up to you thought, i just know how costly putting older bikes that have been off the road for a while through an MOT can be

OK Ta. Thought that was probably going to be the case :p

Couldn't get anything from that link. It only told me the item had either been sold or is no longer available, so gis a clue. What is it; how much; what needs
doing to it?

the real bargains with bike reg plates on old bikes are the ones that the owner doesn't realise money can be made, for example, an older bike with a half decent plate.. just failed MOT get it for a couple of hundered quid and sell the plate, even then you'd only make around £100 i rekon

i managed to get a '86 MT5 through an MOT 2nd time :)
wasnt even running when i got it, no lights worked and ignition wasnt wired in

Yea, but I know nothing about bikes other than they normally have 2 wheels :p

Tempted to buy, get a 'telephone MOT'

Insure it with dad (cheap and this lisence covers it)

Tax it.

Transfer plate.

Cancle insurance, declair SORN and then scrap it.

All for a cherished plate with my initials.

Well, TBH, think I'd rather wait for another JPB plate to hit the bay, will be much easier :p

yeah, youll pick up a similar plate for £100 more than the price of the bike matey

180382466535 type that into ebay search
Thanks Alex. That didn't work the first time, but got it this time.

What happened to buying a wreck, transferring the plate and then just scrapping the heap it was attached to?

If you've got to fix it up, MOT it and then transfer the plate; I think you've got to want it pretty badly or be a handy mechanic to get it reasonably cheaply. This sounds like yet another Government get in everybody's life, screw it up (unless you happen to be on the dole) and make it cost everybody money. Oh, and put a bit in Government coffers as well.

I know.

I've priced it up, on top of bike to transfer reg with dodgy MOT, Tax and insurance will be about £250-£300, plus a further £80 transfer fee from DVLA and then the £275 for the bike.

So £655 all in. TBH I don't think it's worth it personally :p

Unfortunately, even in great nick the poor thing's worth bugger all. If it was a Kwak Z1 or CB750 or even a very early Fireblade it might be worthwhile, but, even a BSA Bantam or James or similar will only fetch a few hundred in great condition so that Japanese Commuter will be worth bugger all. If you do go through with it, be prepared to scrap it because you won't get much for it.
