I am struggling to get my head around what i can, and can't tow - i passed my test after Jan 1st 97', and found this useful site (below), but still dont understand - can anyone help me please?

My Passat doesn't clearly tell me on the vin plate what the numbers mean (i need to dig the log book out), and although i understand i can't two any combination with a greater gross weight of 3500kg, i know i can tow a trailer of at least 750kg, but perhaps a fair bit heavier, depending on my car.

Could someone give an example perhaps of their car, and its towing weights - i can't find anything concrete on the net for mine

My 2000 w reg Passat 1.9TDI 'PD' engined 115bhp estate isn't on there

Assuming (for the sake of my getting my head around it) that its the 100bhp model i have in the same shape:

1.9 TDi 100 bhp 1998

Kerb Weight KG = 1403
85% Weight KG = 1193
Maximum Towing Weight KG = 1400

Trailer MAM = The maximum combined unladen weight of the trailer
and the permitted load it can carry.
Vehicle MAM = The combined vehicle curb weight (unladen weight) and load capacity.

Where is the MAM? I recall seeing 3540kg on the vin plate - could that be it?

I think which ever way i look at it i will nto be able to two a small car trailer and my uno on the back, which is what i want

Still it i am keen to get to the bottom of it as towing a trailer of any nature would be very useful.

The lower weight limit for towing will be with a trailer without brakes, the higher limit is for a trailer with brakes.

Marea 2.0 20v

-Kerb weight 1255 kg
(Includes;fuel, spare tools and accessories)

Towable weight:
-Trailer with brakes. 1300 kg
-Trailer without brakes 400 kg

Maximum loads permitted (**)
-Front axle 1000 kg
-Rear axle 1000 kg
-Total 1830 kg

** Loads not to be exceeded; the driver must arrange the goods in the luggage compartment and / or load surface so that they comply with these limits.
