Ok, the time has come to propose my project and after discussions with various lecturers in my uni, i have come up with this project outline:

To develop my own fully functional and working website about my favourite past time cars.

It will allow users too upload, information and pictures about there cars.

Users will also be able to edit and change their information and picture whenever they like.

Users to the website will be able browse through other peoples cars.

I as administrator will have full control over the content of the website, users will just have control over there part.

So a bit like the photo gallery on the forum, but i havent told them that yet :D

All that im asking is, is it do-able within 5 month deadline, im looking for anyone who has had similier experience in doing this kind of thing before, it has to be done from scratch so i cant go for the easy option and nick it from somewhere, although i will be able to borrow parts off it :p

sorry for pestering, you will all be rewarded in some way :)

cheers,

Gaz, I wrote forum software in a few weeks in asp, what you propose would be very easy... I also have written a basic photo viewer, also in ASP, that took less than a day to code.

EDIT: I don't actually use the forum software that I wrote anymore though.

how would i go about it, i have no idea where to start :(

i will have to learn most things from scratch, im assuming a database back end would be access

Pick a language that you want to use like ASP, there are loads, ASP is easy to learn. Find your self a web host which supports ASP (www.1and1.co.uk or similar). Pick a database that your happy with. Access is OK for a small project. You can build the database back end using the MS Access application, and then create the link in ASP... Here are some links you may find helpful:

www.aspfree.com
www.experts-exchange.com (remove the - and it could read something entirely different)
www.devguru.com
www.w3schools.com

Wow...

All this computer stuff sounds way over my head...

Sounds like a good project though Gaz, one you'll have no problem maintaining an interest in ;)

One small point, and I'm not taking the ****, but there in the context you are using it should be their, just something to change before you submit it.

Best of luck anyhow mate, I'm just beginning on my final year project too, I know its a long road ahead :(

Re: Wow...

i been told off about my spelling already lol

i was wanting to do an easy project, but it looks like i will be hitting the books hard this year :(

but i dont want to fail this year so im gonna be pestering everyone on here :p

Re: Wow...

Since we're being picky, never use words referring to yourself when writing a report, so for example:
To develop my own fully functional and working website about my favourite past time cars.

becomes:

To develop a fully functional and working website about the popular pastime of motoring: more specifically, modified cars .

and:
I as administrator will have full control over the content of the website, users will just have control over there part.

becomes:

The site administrator, as the title suggests, will have complete control over every aspect of the website, whereas each user will only be able to access and control their own zone of the site.

*Ahem* more to follow if required.

Re: Wow...

Visitors to the website will be able to browse with ease, viewing the content and, if they wish, to become members to access certain extra facilities.

The website will allow these members to upload information about, and pictures of their cars and to amend this information when required. Such content will then be made available for visitors of the site to browse.

Oh and I forgot - if a site is functional it's generally working :). Any more you need just ask backstage.

Re: Wow...

As Helz said, you need to use the "inpersonal" view, sometimes third party.
Instead of "I did..." you say "....was done and completed"

Instead of "I intend to..." you say "The aims of the project are...."

It just makes it a more professional and pleasent read, it's what your tutors will want.

I as administrator will have full control over the content of the website, users will just have control over there part.

= The administrator will have....

:D

Re: Wow...

Shut up Gaz! We just have had a lot of practise in this sort of thing, I mean I have written more pages of reports than have had hot dinners! (Probably literally!)

Reports are evil, I just had my first experience with one over the summer. I was only used to the 6 or so sides of A4 from gcse and A level. I saw upwards of 20 sides and nearly died.

Oh you sheltered girl!

My Systems and Control DT project numbered 100 A3 sheets....got 105/105 for it though :p

IT was reams and reams in the good old GCSE days

Chemistry personal invest. was only 22 pages

Physics 26,

Each of my 3 lab write ups are a maximum of 6 pages though, not too bad, not sure what I am going to write though, it's all about Reynold's Friction and Fanning's something or other.
