Along with a new generation of average speed cameras, its a joke:bang: counter productive.

Opinions?

Cynic here...

Lets be clear, the 10Mph reduction wont save any lives but it will rake in extra revenue for our cash-strapped government. Hence the new cameras.

Wont be long before we are all forced into owning and driving 2 cylinder cars that CANT exceed 50Mph.... Civil Liberties Groups where are you?

People of Britain stand up and be counted.... Could anyone see our French, German or Italian Euro bretheren taking this lying down if it was forced on to them?

Oh My God.

Speed has nothing to do with it. I saw a perfect example of crap driving at the weekend. A19 single carriageway to York. Five cars ahead of me a Q7 pulls out to overtake 3 cars in a gap that I have just abandoned when I was planning to overtake one car. Misses a head on by literally 10m or less.

Crap driving and not speed causes accidents.

speed does cause accidents, an accident in a car park is caused by speed (even if it's 1mph!) This new thing is just a tax and i wouldn't be surprised if the company which makes the speed cameras is paying the labour party a substantial amount, or even a labour minister! wouldn't be the first or even second time with this bunch.

about time something is done about it!

100% right. It's about time somebody really looked at these claims for road deaths and "life saving". EG. somebody falls out of a pub and under a car. It's a road death, full stop. Not a drunken pedestrian with a death wish.
If it was really just about saving lives then they could pledge all the fines to go to a sensible charity. Also they could do something serious about:
Drug driving
Driving without Insurance / License / MOT
Drunk foreign drivers (as well as home grown drunks)
Dangerous lorry drivers.
But of course you can't achieve any of these with just cameras can you? You need bobbys on the road to do that. So it won't happen!

its the average speed checks that get me, i agree not all rural roads should be national speed limit, a few local to me have just been changed from 60 to 30 how many people i have spoken to does it bother? none and this is because the road was not safe to do 60mph on thats even if you could get upto it, it's a very twisty road! so people can see that its just common sence to lower to a 30mph limit anyway.

These two comments below the article probably hit the nail on the head for me:

"A large proportion of the accidents on rural roads are caused by young male drivers speeding and overtaking at inappropriate points on the roads. Reducing the speed limit to 50 miles per hour is not going to change this.

Andy, London"

"Is'nt about time people were taught the green cross code.
This genaration have grow up with the volume of traffic, we have to day, but think they have the right to think cars lorrys,SHOULD stop for them.

r. shegog, bournemouth, uk"

And once again speed doesn't kill, it's bad driving that kills. Along with idiot pedestrians with no respect for the road and motor vehicles. About time the authorities concerned worked on prevention rather than cures...

It's about the speed that is appropriate to the conditions (including the skill of the driver). No speed limit is a one size fits all solution.

About time the government woke up to this and got rid of "safety cameras" and greatly increased the numbers of roads police. That way people driving at speeds inappropriate to the conditions would be dealt with and the officer can use his discretion to those who are doing 80mph on a dry, straight motorway at 4 in the morning.

Oh yes, I forgot about the miles of rural roads in London.;)

I drive more miles of rural roads than the average driver. If there is a Motorway and a series of minor roads to get somewhere, then I'll take the rural route - unless I'm in a hurry.

I am perfectly capable of driving within the limits of the road, environment conditions, vehicle and driver. I don't need a namby pamby speed limit to stop me from trying to take a tight left hand bend at 130mph. The Government seem to think without draconian limits that we'd all bury the accelerator to the floor. Maybe it's time they realised that driving comes with risk.

As for quotes on there - I like the one from a Sweedish lady. Goes something along the lines of "figures show that since traffic cameras were introduced the number of accidents has risen... and their answer is to install more?" :spin:

are they serious???

why don't they just make everything 40mph , give us crappy little g-whizes that have a topspeed of liturally 10mph,

install cameras everywhere
btw im being sarcastic
this is because britain has its head so far up americas arse, and aspires to be just like them....

As if lowering the speed limit down by 10 will make any difference, people just speed anyway...
the limit is 60/70 these days and yet people either go too slow (50) or too fast (80+)..

so what's lowering it really going to achieve. speed kills full stop, dropping it down to 50 is not going to make any difference.. it's up to the people to adjust their speed according to the road.. (n)

USA cant abide by speed, arent their m'ways freeways like 50mph??

No. Their speed limits vary from State to State. They used to have a blanket 55mph speed limit introduced after the fuel crisis in the 1970's but that was abolished years ago. Interstate (US motorway equivilent) speed limits vary from 65 - 75 mph depending on State. E.g. Arizona endorses 75mph speed limits whereas California endorses 65mph limits.
