Babysei does................manager!!!!!!

congrats baby!

but i agree with paul - i work for my mother doing NVQ's & Key Skills and everyone hates them - it would save a lot of hassle if you put in a bid to have them stopped :) pleez?

Congratulations Babysei.............................

I hope your transition into management is better than mine has been!

My Area Sector Manager is an arse, I've had numerous ding-dongs with him, he keeps telling me to stop thinking like a Postman, his words are ,do them, challenge them, threaten them with the conduct code, etc. I've defended my 32 staff on various occassions and he hates it, he calls them units or commodities, I call them people. They respond to dignity, respect and being treated like adults but he doesn't buy into my management style, hence my position is under review. I know that he won't remove me before Christmas, but I think I will be demoted or offered another 'project' in the New Year!

Sorry to rant, didn't mean to hi-jack your thread Baby!

Good luck!

Re: Congratulations Babysei.............................

So you're not one of those managers who comes and says "hello, are you all right?" and then goes to the next person every monday TC? That's textbook motivation and does nothing but demotivate!

Paul.................................

not at all mate, I communicate with my staff all night long, I ask them what they want, how they are and I hold a team brief in a conference room once a week for an hour and give them the opprtunity to air their views and tell me what they need to make their job easier and in return they give me productivity. My senior managers don't like my style, they say that I'm sitting on the fence and that I've not made the commitment and transition into management that they expected, they say I'm Postie one minute, Manager the next and they believe I fraternise with my staff too much. They don't believe in good relations, anything to get the workers out on the gate!

I'll give you an example Paul, one of my seniors presented me with this question:

"Savi, if you see a Postman on his delivery and he's not wearing his cycle helmet (they are now obligatory) what would you do?"

Now my shift works from 2130 to 0530 so I am not employed during the hours of a delivery span.

My answer, was "nothing, it has nothing to do with me, they have their own managers who should be imposing the standards set by RM."

His response was, "your commitment to management is poor, you should have challenged the person or reported him to his Line Manager next time you were on shift."

I am employed to work 40 hours a week by RM, I am not a RM 24 hour Policeman and I don't intend to be, if being commited means being an arse, they can demote me to the floor or put me back on projects that involve desk based work because I cannot be who they want me to be in this role.

Stop, don't continue Paul, I'm sorry I mentioned it, I have enough frustrations at work at the moment!

Re: Paul.................................

Just to 'big up' key skills i did the exam and it was on how women drivers were better than male drivers :D

Re: Paul.................................

TC, well that's the sort of thing I like to hear - the opposite to what I faced in the real world. I did AS business studies and they teach crap but most people fortunately know that :)

Re: Paul.................................

I have worked in accountancy practices since 1994, the last 5 years of which have been at a manager level!

I have never ever had to use any textbook/college skills as far as I can recall - instead, all down to real-world experiences, and how you handle people/colleagues/clients/staff.

I suppose from that, I now have a lot of self-confidence, something I was severly lacking when I took my first job in 1994.

Anyway, well done Claire :) - sorry to go a bit OT.

Re: Paul.................................

As a fairly new manager I've been put onto a management course and to be honest it's complete and utter rubbish. Pie in the sky planning and organisation stuff which has no bearing on real life! I have learned far more about it through my short experience than I could learn i a million years of such courses - tey cannot teach you initiative, assertiveness and humantiy which are the three most important things IMO.

Re: Paul.................................

Management I have heard to be described as Being given information, not knowing what to do with it, being in a situation without really knowing how yu got there and still managing to blame it on yure subordinates!!!

Ah well....Nice one Claire!!

Re: Paul.................................

I sympathise with you there Liam as I did some practical networking/ systems courses and decided to take it to the next level by doing an MSc conversion course, which was all theory and I wasted £1500 with nothing to show for it as I got bored and gave up :(. Anyone asks me from now on, practical is the way to go :)
