Cheap or free paving stones

Cheap or free paving stones

we got some of ours from when they took them out from the pavement to replace with tarmac. they're extremely heavy and they need to be for cars, my dads put them down on mud, but when it gets wet it splashes up when weight is put on them, already dug them up to but gravel underneath but ran out so need to do it again.

also isn't there new regulations for drives/patios now too, to make you allow adequate drainage?

try 5 x 6.5 rather than + ;)

Laying a drive is a pretty big project. You need to look at drainage, foundations etc..

Dad's yard hasn't moved since we laid it about 10-12 years ago... probably because it's about 8" of re-enforced industrial grade concrete ;)

I was also going to suggest freecycle for paving and hardcore.
I dug out my whole drive, 12" both sides and middle then four bays, each 8" deep with compacted hardcore beneath (tapped wood between each bay to form expansion joints).
Rather than cover the whole garden, why not just dig out a couple of trenches. See what slabs you get then dig 2 trenches, each one being the width of 2 slabs. Go down 12" then lay in plenty of hardcore & firm it down well (drive the car over it a few times:D) then chuck on a dry ballast/cement mix & lay the slabs over. (I use a couple of lengths of 2 x 2 wood strapped to my roof rails with a tarp thrown over & edges screwed to driveway to form a temporary garage - can be quite cosy even on cold nights).
I had problems with council re dropped kerb but as they laid fresh tarmac, it brought the road up to a 2" drop. What many people do for deep kerbs is to get a huge timber (sleeper or whatever fits?) & rip it diagonally lengthways to form a ramp.

There's some plastic stuff you can roll out onto grass which will allow you to drive on it without churning up the grass (they do a similar thing to provide temporary paths on lawns) then just chuck down a couple of paving slabs to support the axle stands:D

these are good.

ask the council what they do with the old ones they rip and replace with tarmac
Good point. Keep your eyes open locally to see if the council are replacing kerbstones in your area. They've got to do something with the old ones, so you might find that as an alternative to breaking them up and using them as hardcore they may sell them. Just bear in mind these things disappear regularly from Chuchyards and the like on a fairly regular basis.
