FIX YOUR AIRBAGS

Hi guys, my brother has decided to take part in this event, he needs a simple vehicle tough enough to tackle this drive, my opinion is an older land rover, (I dont think the mini is going t make it all the way). Does anyone know of a vehicle which is capable of doing this trip and can be maintained by a complete amateur (with approx a month of training). This vehicle has to have a roll cage installed and must be prepped (chassis strengthened and fuel and brake lines taken inside the car) in 6 months. I am not looking for money, gifts, etc just honest advice of what would be cheapest and most suitable.

Thanks for your advice

You have the usual list of options:

Landies

Zooks

Toyotoas (Get a Land cruiser if poss, if you get a surf get the 3.0 Ltre not the 2.4)

Mitsis - fine but go for a shogun not a Pajero (google spanish and Pajero to see why ;) )

Mazdas should b about in reasonable numbers too

Personally I would go for a Land Cruiser

Trev

i still dont think you need all that lot
why not try somthing like a good chinkichento?
i think that it should do it :(

firstly i dont think your allowerd to drive a Cinq in aus, i wanted to ship mine out but apparently it doesn't conform to the safety regulations.

also i would definatly get something japaneese, getting parts for anything european will be very hard, expencive and possibly not even possible.

Ive done rallies, in my experience you want something very simple mecahnically that will be easy to work on should any faults occur that can be done by the roadside

something that has a large engine bay (not necessarily a large engine in it) so you can get access to perhaps harder to reach mechanics.

Things with a lot of computers like the jap cars etc arent very good, in fact very little jap cars tend to be used on rallies of this type, they may be relaible, but if they fail its more than likely game over.

Purchase a vehicle that has a haynes manual for it also and do the trip with a mechanic

Anything from the 80's that isnt japanese and that is native to europe as well as austrailia would be a good choice IMO

Maybe a Lada Niva....Bulletproof agricultural engineering (easy to fix!), and built for the harsh conditions of the Soviet Union:

Probably pretty cheap too!

Thats what I was thinking Applesei, Ian has come up with the idea of an old Landrover, they are old rugged and reliable, also they will be used to running on the crappy diesel he might find and also is capable of taking additional fuel tanks plus spares like tyres etc. Also there is going to be another landrover doing the rally so a bit of technical help and sharing of spares could be possible. The problem with picking something thats going to be more comfortable, shogun etc is the reliabilty and compication of more technology. I was thinking about a Panda/Uno with points, but I think a simple 4x4 would be better and less likely to cause problems.
If anyone has 4 months to spare then Ian still needs a co-driver.

LOL I always spell Sydney wrong, I have offered to put chimes on anything Ian chooses but can you imagine going to the side window and when the border guard asks for his documents Ian asks if he wants a flake in it?

They've made a bridge from like India to russia, or thailand or something??

Whatever way you go...when i flew to Aus i saw no Bridges lol if there is that is amazing.

Road Trip!!!!!!:p:p:p:p:p:p

Plus you can't drive all the way to Sydney your have to drive to like India but you'd have to get a boat to france and a boat to Aus.
