was that before or after farming today?
I think it was after the Shipping Forecast - "Sole, Lundy, Fastnet, Irish Sea - winds decreasing three or four..." etc.

Not thick, it's quite a hard thing to visualise. The electricity is made by a conductor being moved through a magnetic field. In the alternator in fact you spin a magnet and have fixed coils. Now with no load all the work the engine has to do is to overcome the frictioal loss in the bearings and slip rings and the rotor windage(plus anything else I've forgotten. ) The reason for this is no current is flowing. When we put a load on the generator then a current flows in the coils which generates a magnetic field in opposition to the one in the rotating magnet. ( It comes out like this because of conservation of energy) The work being done by the engine is to overcome the same force you would feel if you tried to push 2 like poles of a magnet together. (ie S ti S or N to N)What am i missing here? Alternator charges battery, but the alternator is being driven constantly by the belt, therefore I can't see how using the lights uses any more fuel.
If the alt was driven from a clutch then yes you could disengage it and then it won't spin when not needed.
But I can't see the 'uses more fuel' argument on the majority of cars.
Or am i being thick? Its been a long day.
when i was a young un i got pulled for it loads of times, sometiems twice in the same week. it only made fogs even more of a statement- "look i'm so cool i dont even care if i get pulled over".the police should clamp down on tw*ts with their fog lights on in all weathers.

on the mk2 the fogs are in the headlamps. If i had fog lights i would always have them on.

maybe your pauper spec model doesnt have them.
it doesnt.
i would only have them on if they were seperate like this....
Seen many tosspot drivers this morning driving about with front/rear foglights on depsite visibilty clearly being more than 100m on a slight foggy morning in the north
Are you trying to blind us all or something you tw*ts?

in the manual they are called foglights, and the switch has a classic foglight switch symbol. Are they 'fogs' or more likely 'spot' lights?
