i've been keeping my car in the garage and completely off of the road as it has NO MOT.

my mother was arguing the point to me yesterday that it is completely fine to keep a car that is TAXED and INSUED but without MOT on the road.....

this sounds very dodgy to me, i think the only reason she has said this is because she really wants the car out as it consumes the entire garage but to avoid a find and family argument can someone confirm for me if its legal or not to leave the car parked on the street with no MOT?

Thanks,
Ry

I would have said it's probably illegal.

But TBH if it's sitting there on the road Taxed and insured, it's unlikly to get found out unless the police decide to do a check on it, or an ANPR van drives down your road and scans it. Is it a quite road you live on?

iirc the fine for no MOT is only about £20, but not sure if they also tow the car aswell now

Jon.

If it doesn't have a MOT doesn't that mean its not road worthy? Or not been tested to see if its road worthy?

If you cant drive it without a MOT, I dont think you can leave it on the road.

Might be completely wrong though.

It'll need a valid MOT for it to legally be on the road (including it being parked on the road).

Ry, you can claim the tax back for each full month remaining, and SORN it at the same time.

It's ilegal to keep a car on the road that doesn't have a valid MOT / insurance / TAX it must have all three to be legal.

You may find it's not insured if the MOT has lapsed too, most policeis have a clause along the lines of

"the vehicle must be kept in a road worthy condition" the legal definition of road worthy is an up to date MOT.

as soon as a defect occurs the MOT is no longer valid and thus not up to date ;) (y)

Either way you need an MOT, TAX and insurance to keep a car on the road.

I always thought it was legal as long as you didn't drive anywhere. Even then you are allowed to drive as long as you are going to a MOT station with one already pre-booked.

How about giving your local bobby a ring and ask them. You dont have to leave them your registration mark or name etc. Just ask them through curiosity ;)

Even if you disconnect the battery so at least it proves you are not driving it.

I'd say that's risky and if you get caught the argument against would simply be

"how do we know your not going to re-connect the battery and drive ilegaly?"

It's simply not worth the risk :(

no point really, TAX is 200 bloody quid! rather leave it on

whats the point in that? why waste the tax on it when its in the garage rotting away unused

May as well refund it and put towards the repair. Get a form from post office

you only need MOT to use it on the road.
to keep it on the road you only need tax and insurance.
