Who do you support?

Who do you support?

You know what I mean, the Eircom League, soon to be changed! Why do you think I watch it in a pub? The league is rubbish, no players and no money! Even the international team is terrible and you can't deny that! Irish sport in general lacks funds and talent. Look at the Olympics for example, what a poor showing!

Why do I think you watch it in a pub? Because every single United, Chelsea and Liverpool "supporter" in my company (100+ people) with the exception of one 'pool fan sees their team live - as in, in the flesh, in a stadium - at most once a season. Watching football on the television does not come close to support.

The league has plenty of money - outside of Cork. Just because both your Premier teams are unsustainable doesn't mean theres problems elsewhere. As goes players - theres clearly enough players to field 22 teams every weekend - don't see how thats "no" players. Theres enough talent to most likely put a team in to the first round proper of the UEFA Cup tonight, despite the comparative historic weakness of the league.

And sport in general wouldn't lack funds in this country if the GAA didn't hoover up close to 90% of all state funding - building oversized stadia they can no longer fill being a major problem.

and how did they get money?

(through the quality of football)

Dunno about that - correct me if I'm wrong - but I'm almost certain that the latest strip (which changes every year of course) doesn't cost them £75 to make. And assuming that 10,000 out of the potential fanbase of any given team buy them that's 3/4 million already, without breaking a sweat. Now consider how much Carling/AEG/Siemens etc may be sponsoring them for, and how much this pushes up the price of a pint or a mobile phone so that some nonce can run about on a field and act worse that Keanu Reeves and get paid more ...

foreign teams charge the same price for their kits.

and why do you think the big companies chose to invest in these teams? maybe because they are good get lots of coverage and will play more games than other teams.(y)

I'm in college so disposable income to go and watch a match in UK is not really a luxury I have. Does your idea of "support" follow onto everything is live? Unless you are there in the flesh it doesn't count as support? Get real!

The league has no bloody money nor does it have talent! To be able to field a team is not a measure of success, I can get a few lads together and have a kick around. First round of the UEFA Cup..woohoo !! I'd rather watch Delia Smith beating a few eggs than an Eircom League game! I know one person that used to follow it but I think even he gave up on it! No one cares about it, Eircom even realise that!!

:yeahthat:

It's the quality of business and sponsorship raised rather than the quality of football that raises the money. A photographer friend mine was employed to take pictures for a catalogue of all the merchandise that a north London football club sold. The list was enormous, took over a week to photograph everything and included logo'd doormats and even golf balls! You name it and they were trying to sell it :shakehead:

Football has become a business money machine rather than a sport. The money gets in the way of the true sportsmanship and playing now. Sad :(

Believing everything you read in the papers, I see? The Indo retracted, with a miniscule article, their absolute misinformation that Eircom had "pulled out". The commercial partner deals for both the League and the national team are being announced shortly - the League may no longer be Eircom supported but this would solely be down to someone making a better offer.

Rest of your post is the typical barstooler attitude - big game Charlie who doesn't even go to said big games. Enjoy supporting a team you've no actual connection to...

And really - if you think you can get some lads together and field a team that'd even qualify for the 'A' Championship (Division 2, so to speak) - go ahead. You'll fail woefully. Try again when you've a few million for facilities and semi-professional quality players. Yet further proof you're hopelessly out of touch with the reality of the League.

FAI executives didn't even know what was going on with Eircom! I read the Examiner btw!

You seem to have some trouble reading, I have said that I am in college. How can I go to matches in a different country when I am still in full time education? Living away from home and having a car doesn't give me the opportunity to travel to the UK multiple times during a season as I already stated.

Yet again you seem to have misread my post as I did not refer to putting a team together for the league but merely stated that having enough people to field a side is not a sign of success because it is easy to round up a few lads and tap a ball around !

I'll leave you have your delusions of grandeur about the Eircom League. It's no more than a joke!

So you 'support' a team you not only have no connection to but that you cannot see play live? I'm sorry to say I can't see the sense in that. Its no more than a joke, to be honest...

I never claimed that being able to field a team was a sign of success. You, however, appeared to suggest that League sides here were unable to field teams - you appear to have some problems writing if this wasn't what you meant.

You're a barstooler. Simple as.

Additionally - do you think the 'quality' of the League is helped by tens of thousands of potential supporters and millions of euro flooding out of the country? Of course not. People who are so ignorant of the domestic game as to think another countries league operates here aren't helping the situation either...

What connection do I need to have? Do I need to have my friend Johnny up the road being water boy, my father to be a caretaker, my brother to be on the team, my mother making sandwiches to be a supporter?? I cannot travel but in this modern era I can watch games live or listen to them live as do many people do in this country.

No players as in good talented players that actually have some future! I know people who play in the League, they are just part-timers who are plumpers or something during the week!!! Most of the players don't have any future in the game, they play for a few years and then go back being a brickie or selling cars!!

People look to foreign leagues because the Irish one is so bad!! An Eircom league game is so lackluster and so boring. If it was any good people would follow it but plainly it is of poor quality. If I could go and see a good Irish game I would go every week with a doubt.

You can keep calling me a barstooler all you like my opinion of the league will not change until every aspect of it is improved immensely. Your agrument of me being a "barstooler" is feeble, if I listen to a cd instead of going to see a band play everytime they play can I still say I am a fan? If I watch Ferrari in F1 on tv instead of going to see every race can I not be called a fan? For the majority of people tv and radio is as close to the real thing as they can get and while I am still in full time education that is as close to it as I shall get!

I have a passing interest in the big Midlands teams and always like to see them do well. If it's two teams polaying I'm not fussed about, the most northerly team gets my support :D I also keep an eye on Carlisle and Walsall's performance, been a while since I've seen either though :(

Have to agree with the comments on overpaid players and how costly this makes it to support a team if you want the gear, to watch matches etc.Plus the local teams with local talent are much more interesting :D

Southampton, ever since I can remember.

That being said, I cant stand football, as people have said before, they are all over paid etc.

Womens football on the other hand...

Na i just spend time down here with my gf in cobh mate. Ah cobh ramblers only game i actually bothered to watch was the last time they won and that was back in april lol against shamrock rovers

You expect the league to improve if nobody goes and watches it? Are there magic pixies providing funding for professional teams these days?

Also, go obtain a video of the Elfs/Pats game tonight and tell me, with a straight face, it was a bad game or of poor quality. Ditto a video of any Dublin derby, or the North West derby. Anyone who claims the league is of poor quality these days either has unrealistic expectations (you're not going to be Ronaldo playing eL) or hasn't seen a game in some years.
