TBH, when I'm draining my life force into the fuel tank, I really couldn't care less which company or individual is getting the odd few pence per litre that goes to the oil company, my gripe is with the 70 - odd percent our government is screwing us for.
The oil company deserve the few pence they get for the fuel, after all, they had to find it, get it out of the ground, refine it & get it to the forecourt. Our beloved Government, on the other hand, did bugger all by way of contribution & don't really give anything back to the motorist either.

What Caption?

'Honey, I'm just off out for a drive, where are the car keys?'

Wife 'Which ones?'

Or

'Right we're off to the show now'

Driver - 'Which car do you want to take?'

'The BMW'

Driver - 'Which one sir?'

'The 9th one'

Driver - 'Which one is the 9th one?'

:ROFLMAO:

Far to many cars. Talk about carbon foot print and one for each day of the fortnight

You took the words out of my mouth!

Fuel duty on petrol and diesel is currently set at £0.5035 per litre but for some reason it's subject to VAT on top of that which means it's closer to 45-50% of the price at the pump, depending on whether you use diesel or petrol. Wikipedia claims that fuel duty raised £23.3 Billion for the treasury in 2004-5  Still, at least with that sort of revenue we are safe in the knowledge we have some of the best maintained roads and services in the world ..... ah hang on ... where's it all being spent?

I was going to say, I'm still fighting for the £130 it cost me to fix the Panda from a pot hole incident

Makes me ****ing sick :yuck::mad:

.

It's a lot more than 70%

70% of the price of a litre of fuel is tax, so that means (to make it easy for me to calulate) if a litre was £1, only 30p of that is the actual cost of a litre of fuel.

So, 100% tax would make it 60p a litre, 200% tax would be 90p a litre etc.

I think the actual figure for the amount we pay in tax on a litre of fuel is about 300%...
Which is completely insane when you remember that nearly everything else is taxed at 17.5%

Ummmm no - the fuel duty is currently fixed at 50p + VAT per litre (as the chancellor kindly opted not to add 2p to it in the last budget), irrespective of the price of fuel at the pump. So about 58p of your at the pump price is tax which equates to 45-50%....

Don't get me wrong, it's still a lot more than it should be, but it's the cost of a barrel of crude oil which has been driving the prices up...

if something costs 50p but after tax it's £1 that's 100% tax,

according to http://www.petrolprices.com/fuel-tax.html

the percentage of duty fluctuates. when Gordon Brown took over as chancellor, 81% of the price of a litre of petrol was tax. At the last count it was about 70%.

I'll take it it's still about 70% because I can't believe it's dropped from 70% to 50% overnight, people would be jumping for joy in the streets...

if you pay £1.20 a litre, that's 84p tax...which leaves 36p

How do you get from 36p to £1.20?

easy...you add (roughly) 200%... if I use your figure of 50% and petrol was 1.20 that's 60p... even that's 100% tax and that's a very optimistic figure.

when you remember that everything else is taxed at 17.5%, 100% tax is absolutely insane.

Of course the percentage fluctuates - that's because the price of petrol (as a result of the price of crude oil) fluctuates. But the duty itself is fixed!

The fuel duty IS 50p + VAT (and the link you posted states that!). It WAS 54p + VAT prior to 1st April 2008. It will likely be 52p + VAT after 1st October 2008. It will likely be 54p + VAT after 1st April 2009.

So if I pay 115.9p for my litre of petrol, roughly speaking 58p of that is fuel duty tax. This must mean the rest (assuming no profit for the forecourt) is 50p of oil cost and 8p of VAT. Which I make to be 64p or 55%. Any profit taken out of that will reduce the raw materials cost and lower the VAT figure.

If I pay 128.9p for my litre of diesel, that's 58p as fuel duty, 60p in oil cost and 11p of VAT. 69p of tax or 54%.

Maybe it's time to start jumping for joy in the streets ;)

no, you don't get it. I'll have one more go...

what you're saying there is that 69p of the £1.29 is tax...right?
that leaves 60p... So the actual cost of the fuel is 60p before tax...am I right so far?

What is 100% of 60p? It's 60p isn't it? So you're paying more than 100% in tax.

I'm terrible at maths but it looks obvious even to me.
Someone help me out here...

Still way cheaper than beer per litre. Glad I dont drink, I take it as money off at the pumps & out of the Chancellors fat wallet...

Gordon Brown PM = The Sherriff of Nottingham...Any Robin Hoods about or are all Politicians Robin B'stards?

I do get what you're saying (and it's a valid point) but I didn't agree with how you arrived at your 300% figure so I was just pointing out that the fuel duty is capped and so tax is significantly less than some of the sensationalist media types would have you believe. It's the oil price which is driving up the cost at the pump (and lowering the percentage the government take).

Petrol-prices quote the tax as a portion of the price at the pump which is what I've been doing. Of course, you can represent it the other way around and say we're paying 100% tax.

Either way, it's a hefty chunk for the motorist to pay into the coffers with very little return :(

Chris

Of 128.90p, VAT is charged on the fuel + DUTY amount; so actual VAT is 7/47ths of this figure, namely 19.20p

So it is split:

Net Duty 50.35p current rate of duty
VAT 19.20p as above

Therefore, total VAT and Duty = 69.55p sum of the above
Pre-tax cost is the balance = 128.90 - 69.55 = 59.35p

Therefore, taxation [being VAT and Duty] is about 117% in this example.
