One of my pet subjects. It's so much easier / cheaper / safer to reverse into a space and pull out forwards.

Why do they only reckon it saves money with petrol, not diesel. Diesel engines use more fuel when cold too.

And why does the woman at the start of the video make such a hash of reversing into what's not even a marked space, when she's supposed to be illustrating how much easier it is ?

(Filmed at my local Tesco - shame I wasn't down there at the time)

This is one of my pet hates, it's so much safer to reverse into a space than out.
When you reverse out you can't see what's coming, especially if there are bigger cars or vans either side of you.
If you reverse in you're already outside the space so you can see what's coming so it's easier and safer.
Supermarkets make it difficult to load shopping for reverse parkers by putting bollards at the back of bays so drivers are put off reversing in.
I leave enough gap at the back to open the boot but that silly bollard still gets in the way. I absolutely refuse to drive into a bay though, it's just not safe.

i almost always reversed into a space. though this is partly due to the crap turning circle of my tipo and the road bits between the sides was rarely wide enough to drive straight in.

the only exception was at sainsburys on a saturday where you'd get your nose into the first space you'd find as you could never reverse into a space as someone would nick it. and people let you out as they're desperate for a space so it works out much better.

as for the diesel vs petrol i'm assuming it's due to the fact that it's the compression that controls the rate of diesel use rather than the spark/heat/comp of the petrol. i'm sure someone can give a proper reason, but i'm sure my friend said on short journeys it's just as economical to use his 2.5 td land rover than it is to use his 1.3 fiesta. though that's probably a bad example lol.

Its probably the mincing around at low speed for no distance travelled that they reckon uses fuel, whereas if you pull out forwards theoretically from the moment you pull away your heading for where you going also car warms up faster underload.

You still have to use petrol to guide the car in when you reverse anyway, and it takes longer than driving into a space forwards. The amount of petrol it saves is minute and completely pointless tbh

Yes and no, they say the car uses more fuel when cold, the car will also use more fuel when in reverse gear because of the gear ratio?!? So reversing in when warm means you only use twice as much fuel, rather than 3 times as much when cold because the engine is also having to warm up?

Diesels have a lower 'cold penalty' than petrols. Means a small diesel i.e 1.3 multijet can be a lot more efficient than a small petrol when used for short journeys around town.. 'Diesles are only for people who do high mileage' is a bit of a myth now.

but when i part I'm straight in and straight out no matter how i park.
so i don't see this working at all for me

also i cant reverse park if they arnt any cars in spaces next to me :(
of if they are parked too far away

and last question how do you put the shopping in your boot?

i just open my doors makes it a bit eeasier or find a wall to park next to align to

what ever makes it easy for you (y)

if you watch a lorry driver reverse parking, they are looking at their back wheel in the mirror and they can follow a line into a parking bay to within a centimetre.
You can do the same in a car, just sort of stretch up a bit (cos car mirrors are too small) and you can see your back wheel.

The reason thats true, is that to recoup the money you've spent, usually about £1000 over a petrol equivalent, using fuel thats 15p a litre more you have to do 20k for 3 years to break even. Not including the extra tires you'll have to buy for sticking a heavy lump in the nose.

tilt your mirrors down slightly, or stretch up, or lean out the window and follow the white lines in

Anyone who has driven a van will know how to reverse park using mirrors. It's so easy with electric mirrors to tilt them up and down.

Opening the door for reverse parking can be risky, your so busy parking that you dont notice the slightly open door scraping along a kerb or another car.
