Here is a useful article about the imminent release:

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/?news/news_story.php?id=61594

Only an 80Meg download, lol, and it is going to be filtered out to the end-users gradually.

However, priority is going to be given to those who have 'auto-update' turned on. Mine is, so may be worth checking your settings.

I don't have a bandwidth problem, but can imagine someone on dial-up and having auto-update 'on', this download then clogging their system.

OR just buy a magazine as stated in the article, get it on CD-Rom.

Stu

Ah, 266 Meg only if on a network, and as per Sh33n's link.

The 80 Meg I quoted was for stand-alone home machines, and that will be maximum. I presume if the machine pretty much up-to-date, may be a slightly lesser download. Be interesting to see when I get mine in a few weeks.

to be honest i think it will be a waste of time if you have dial up.

it will take you hours upon hours to download and I dont think the benefits of it will outweigh this time taken to download it. Don't bother i say.

That was my point of this thread - if you got dial-up AND auto-update on, then I am suggesting you turn it off and buy a mag with it on. Otherwise you may wonder why the machine has started to clog up for no apparent reason...

Just glad I am on ADSL at home and work :)

Will get it at school then. T10 line. Can go put a dime in the soda-machine and it will be downloaded before I get back. My modem dial-up at home is useless I see.

Will it work with my not-so-very-paid-for XP? Have SP1 installed.

Morten.

Thats what I was wondering Mort, I "accquired" a copy with certain vulnerabilities written out and was thinking about that.

Regarding auto-update you can set it so that you are prompted to download and install any updates available as opposed to it doing it automatically.

I can not see why not, if you download just the file and them install it, i.e. without using the autoupdate then u should have no problem. I am in the same situationas you, but time will tell. I have just started the download of the 266Mb version, i am on a newly upgraded (for free) NTL 300K connection and it says it will take 2hours 15mins from now and i have done 7.05Mb so far. Here is me hoping it does after waiting that long for it to download.

All working fine and dandy here on a slipstreamed XP Corporation version :)

Even recognises NOD32, after I had to get the beta of it from a source ;)

Hehe, took me 35 seconds to download the entire 266 MB.

that a mega fast download rate, nice one. Took my 2.5 hours the other night. Its all installed now, with the extra security things i don't like (hence i turned them off). the computer is running faster now :D:D:D

Yeah I know, fast as hell. School's line is the best in town.

What extra security settings are you mentioning? I have XP's firewall installed with F-Secure anti-virus (has NEVER let me down in 5 years!!!) running on the side.

Morten.

you get more internet security options, i.e. pop up blocker. which i have found useless already as some sites i go on use the pop feature and it stopped me from using them. hence i tuened that off. Also it installs a virus protection and brings the XP firewall and automatic updates more in your face, i.e. keeps asking you more about your settings etc. I have tuned all of these off as i am running Macfee AV and Zonealarm Firewall which has not failed me yet, one of the reason why u turn it off.

Took me just under 30 mins to download it, disabled ICF because I already use ZAP and I use Firefox (superior browser 10x better than IE) so spyware isn't a problem for me :D:D:D:D:D

i am still using IE and have not had a problem with spyware cause of the setup i am running. I use a little program called spy sweeper to kill any spyware that i get. Since i last formatted the pc 3 months ago i have not had one bit :D:D:D

IE is an insecure, and generally unstable browser compared to many others out there. Whilst it may have been the best a couple of years ago, the competion have overtaken it in terms of quality :D
