how can i get one i want ? with out going on the dvla and having one of the prefix ones ?

or how do i check its available ?

dvla website offers more than "one of the prefix ones", you get get suffixes and dateless. pretty much the whole spectrum.

you can enquire on there to determine if it is / could be available.

a car history enquiry ala autotrader would tell you if it is currently on a registered vehicle.

lots of other number plate dealers do similar fuctions to the dvla - for price comparison, try newreg (.co i think).

also, somewhere within the dvla site the auction history also details what has been auctioned in the past, so you could see if "your plate" has ever been sold.

some marks - esp rude innuendo - has been permanantly excluded from release.

DVLA are the cheapest too, as everyone else will end up purchasing the plate from them and adding their mark-up to the final price.

When I was looking for mine most places wanted £100+ on top of what the DVLA were asking.
