What's made you grumpy today?

My golf likes to play a mean trick, obviously now all these gauges are digital and software drives them the light comes on when you have 40 miles range left, the gauge does not seem to directly represent an amount of fuel, then as you continue to drive another 5 - 10 miles the remaining range changes accordingly but the gauge goes down the red portion of the gauge rapidly so by the time you have 20 miles left its showing empty scaring you into filling up.

Mines nowhere near that clever, if anything it's like no one told it that it has a 12 gallon rather than 10 gallon tank.

It's sitting outside at the moment showing 310 miles since last fill up and quarter of a tank on the gauge. Which at the 42 mpg shown on the trip computer makes sense if it was a 10 gallon tank. 420 mile range, but given it's a 12 it should have a 504 and show just between half and quarter.

Citroen is amusing mainly because it has rising panic as the fuel level drops. Changing the message, the colour of the message, the warning chime, how often that chime goes off and eventually starts flashing the fuel light red when it is normally solid Amber.

From around 8:30 this morning, next door is building some decking, so lots of banging noises. OK, he does a good job, so won't take long.

At the same time, a house across the road is doing similar, at the rear of their garden, which backs onto our road. Normal building noises across the road should not be a problem, but these two guys are presumably deaf from their work, as they have a large site radio blaring. This is loud enough to give me a thumping beat, with additional muffled varying tones accompaniament, audible inside the house with the windows shut.

There are two of them, they are presumably professionals, and have a smaller job to do. I bet they'll take longer than the skilled amateur next door.

Perhaps an illustration of why we have strict gun laws.

The way USA cities have allowed Marxists to take over has set up a pressure cooker with protect and survive "Preppers" from the suburbs. The city mayors seem to want communist mob control and the presidency is not doing anything to upset the election.

Hopefully, we wont soon soon be seeing armed militias from both sides claiming territory.

Malnutrition can result from being fed plenty, but all the wrong stuff, or lacking in variety. Malnutrition may not relate to being poor, but poor priorities. Each individual case is different, and glob figures will mask the detail.

If during lockdown you have watched much telly, you will have been bombarded by begging adverts for so many charities, it is likely people will switch off to such stories, hence few replies.

It is not up to the government to feed people, any more than it's up to government to clothe people. The problem is that too much is done for some folks. There's no downside to bad behaviour.

We’re a 1st world country not a 3rd world country and while you could argue it’s not up to government to feed people that’s why we have a tax system that pays for a benefits system And health care system, if the government didn’t do this then rather than children being malnourished they would be dead, and let’s not forget these are children not adults, they are not able to make decisions for them self on what they do or don’t get food wise, they don’t understand what is good and what is bad food and as Portlandbill rightly points out is you can eat a lot and still be badly malnourished. Easily seen where fussy eating kids will only eat chips and nothing else and end up with all sorts of deficiencies of vitamins and minerals.

Sailors still got scurvy despite plenty to eat because they had no Vitamin C and these days Ricketts has made a comeback because kids stay indoors all the time eating chicken nuggets and not getting any vitamin D

Obviously we do care, it insults everyone to imagine we don't, the debate has to be better about what we do about it.

For example school meals can and should be used to fill in the gaps, and, more generally, it has been proven many times by most metrics that school is the least unsafe (or best) place for all children.
Then what? You have children fed chips by parents through the bars, people complaining about nanny state, and more recently a shocking partisan debate about school re openings.
The subject might have been handled better by the Gov, however, everyone looking for holes, rather than solutions, don't have anything to be proud about either with closed schools.
The Queues around Mcdonalds are interesting, not sure how we can improve nutrition with what people want to eat. Even Crunchy Nut Cornflakes are fortified with Vit D, though an anti vaccer will be complaining about that any day now....

These are often the children working parents.
people who probably thought the same way as you until their circumstances changed and they found it don't matter if you have paid in for years, when you need it there is nothing there

school meals needed to be paid for, you only get free school meals if you get a benefit, that will takes months to sort out
if a pandemic strikes and you find you cant go to work dont qualify for grants or furlow or have to wait months for you 80% for self employed people, how do you feed the kids:rolleyes:

there was no school so no chips through school gates, no mc donalds were open,:shakehead:

Not caring was bad enough but actually finding excuses for not caring is sick

Want to know what i want to do? I want to be able to visit each of them and find out really what their situation is.

Thinking about how the pandemic has exaggerated any malnutrition, school meals are an obvious helper, and there must be a connection between free meals and this problem, and they have been getting vouchers, though there were issues reported, and not sure they were that much money.
The food bank in Thetford had massive donations, again, people need vouchers to use it though.

Clinical malnutrition takes months to develop and being really blunt there has been time to prepare good food from cheaper raw ingredients. I understand how people lose, or never had, capacity to look after themselves, nevermind kids, can we ever find an answer to that? My default has always been better schools but am learning that you simply can't catch everyone in even the best systems.

More social services perhaps? Seem to recall a few well reported disasters, the occasional feeding frenzy from the press, you join a few feeding frenzies yourself Dave, it can take credit away from some good work that gets done. There was a time director of social services was a real poison chalice.

Thing is Dave that I think sharing a few pints with you would be productive, your passion is to be respected.
Or are you trying to score points off a government you didn't vote for, when any government would be struggling with these issues (given money is not endless)? I have seen the Boris artwork, funny, he is often exposed for that, it's not really helpful in a debate though.

Your anger might stop you seeing some of the good people are trying to do, just in a different way, and that would open up the debate.
What would you do?

A very good friend of mine got driven to chronic fatigue by the social care system. In charge of a unit at age 25 and unable to work by age 28. Still struggling 7 years later. Immune system and health destroyed by stress and over work. How many wise decisions was she making in the year before her health collapsed? There's a reason social services are always understaffed and it's not only the money.

The point is governments claim they can fill bottomless pits. The truth is they could add orders of magnitude to the money and it will never be enough.

That's where you problem lies drinking to hide away from reality.

Free meal vouchers were for people who were already getting free meals, not for all the people who suddenly found out they had no income and could not get any help.

Under 5's have vouchers for free milk and fruit and veg, but if you had to isolate and shop online you cant use them vouchers.

Stop victim blaming

For the last 15 years or so.. many schools have run 'breakfast clubs'

Where the pupils go in 1/2 hour early and actually get fed.. this means they are not playing up and disturbing the lessons for those that do get more than 1 meal a day
(Obviously those fed breakfast in school also learn better)

This isnt a 'Covid thing' ... but of course some wont have had their 'School Breakfasts' for 3 months

That's the sort of thing my brother in law from the USA is constantly posting. He's got to the point now that rather than just being against masks he's challenging people in the street and demanding they remove them on the grounds they are communist/evil/satanist or all three if they are Democrats.
