If i wanted to sell a private numberplate can it just be sold and then transferred or does it have to be put on retention first? :D

Has to be put on retention, then you can sell the certificate on.

How do you put it on retention and how long does it take? Sorry if i sound dumb (well i am anyway!) but it's not plate i've just been asked to sell it.

It's a bit more technical than that.

Once you've put your number on retention you have to add the buyer as a Nominee. The Retention Certificate will then be sent back to you with the buyers details on it, at which point you sign it and give it to them to have assigned to their car.

As with everything to do with the DVLA it's a proper pain in the ar$e!

If its on a car presently - go to local DVLA office with details of the car its coming off. You'll be given a certificate of retention, and you'll have to re-assign the previous reg to that car, which will cost you BTW.

The certificate is valid for 12 months at which time it either has to be assigned to a car or you'll have to pay a fee to keep it on retention.

Your local DVLA office will give you the necessary form to fill in. They then take the V5C and MOT (if the car needs one) and £105 off you and process the application.

The actual process takes 7 working days (so really about 10 days) but then you can wait up to 6 weeks for the Retention Certificate to be posted back to you from Swansea.
