who? have you been reading tabloids?

the data was transmitted electroncially to a secure facility owned by Pearson Driving Assessments Ltd in Iowa and stored on a hard drive. that hard drive went missing.

at this stage it seems "data-room mismanagement" lead to loss of the hard drive, as they routinely destroy certain data in line with the data protection act. i think it was a mix up.

there is plenty of security in palce and it seems very unlikely that the informaiton got into the wrong hand. if it did the disk was formatted specifically to fit Pearson configuration so it cant be read by a third party (although any security can be broken)

people with political agendas jump on things like this amd make them seem far worse than they are so we lose faith in the current govt's ability. end of the day no one had any control over this other than the staff in Iowa, and their procedures have been certified several times in the past so any govt would be justifed in using their services and should not be held responsible for data loss. but it makes good news so the media abuse it.

its not pointless if you're trying to damage the labour party and stur up a bit of bad publicity. threads like this demonstrate the effectiveness of bad publicity, even if its based on half facts and biased opinion.

well it's not really an issue then is it lol. what a pointless story...

Correct, another totaly pointless and worthless issue that will soon be forgotton about. Its another typical example of media-hype......something else will be along soon. However it did make a change from reading about Princess Dianas inquest, the McCanns and that bloke with the canoe from Seaton-Carew.

According to the data protection act, the data should never have left the EU in the first place so I'd still like to know why it was in Iowa - this hasn't been explained. Plus the fact they don't actually KNOW where it is, people are only surmising it MIGHT be lost. IMO that's even worse than having knowingly lost it and knowing where it's gone.

There should be controls and SOPs in place. Where are the SOPs and why were they not followed? Does the data still leave the UK or are public bodies now complying with the government's own Act? If we dealt with patient sensitive data the way the government seem to, we'd be sued to the max and bust within a month

And the government want more centrally-stored records? I think not, not until the above issues are dealt with.

there is no problem sending data outside the EU with permission, and they have your permission if you read the T&C's.

i'm sure no-one on FF woud ever sign anything without reading the T&Cs :)

it only takes a single term in the T&C's, it will say something like "transfer of personal data for processing in a third country". legally "processing" is any use of your data, and "third country" is anywhere on earth.
