It's a lovely city with some VERY bad areas. It (I believe) has the highest rate of gun crime in the UK - the police are really "pissed off" now about it and getting very serious. After the Jamican was attacked the man came on the radio and said sternly:
"We will get this man, we will charge this man, he will be convited and be locked up for aslong as he can think of and plan the rest of his life behind bars, this man is scum and we will do EVERYTHING in our power to see that he goes down"
I was driving home and it scared me - the man said it with such conviction - just hope all the coppers are so bothered!
Yeah, I can't think of the actual bank you're talking about but the following is the armed robberies I can think of recently:
Mapperley post office, 2 ladies tied down and robbery with weapons commenced - I happened to drive past there 2 mins after they had sped off as the police arrived, never seen so many coppers in one place at the same time!
Jewellry shop in Arnold; think somebody was shot in that one and died? Maybe wrong though.
Natwest Bank (i think....) on errrm, Road from Bobbers Mill into town.....ilkeston/alfreton/nottingham road (never remember which one of about 5 all very similar!) has had not one but TWO armed robberies in about a year.
Those are just off the top of my head; i don't even watch local news much so there will be plenty more
In terms of petty crime I am not sure if Nottingham is any worse than anywhere else but i certainly know that on the 2 last occasions in to town i have been troubled by begger type people. I am not a small guy/look particularly well off but i was followed by one of them into a quiet part of victoria cente in the evening, getting aggressive for money, i had to go away so quickly! Every single time I pick my sister up from the station on friday evenings I get this idiot begger who goes around person after person "money?" - not just once, he asks you every minute or so when he comes back around to you. Four times I have gone to ask for the traffic police to come and take him away with the answer "they know about him and have been called"....really....why is he here AGAIN!?
So now I actually do feel threatened sometimes in my own town and I am not kidding. It wouldn't put me off yet, but I know that when I walk past McD's (their fave hang out spot) on culumber street I will be followed by somebody no older than me asking for money etc. The police...what police?! They certainly aren't bothered with those people.
At least we're not as bad as many places in the US, but how long?
P.S don't be scared of nottingham, i could name you bad experiences in most cities I have been to and gun crime is on the rise all over.
