What lessons are they going to learn in a detention centre!

They will come out worse than they went in!

my mother's finacee died of a heart attack 3 years ago when he confronted 2 lads who damaged their car outside a pub, neither of them were prosecuted, not even for criminal damage, however one of them received some real punishment instead

I thought the sentences were quite tough considering their ages, well, tough compared to the usual lenient stuff.
The family thought that justice had been done.

The only way they would ever learn is if they had rocks thrown at them. To see what its like and i bet they would never do it again.

it depends what the forim of detention is and how much of that is served in the end.
its obvious they were troublemakers from the off

an eye for an eye. Yup, if you give it you should be able to take it. A simple rule. Bring back public stoning.

And as soon as you chop off their hands, you'll have the do-gooders getting them all sorts of disability benefits.
IMO, the old boy died as a direct result of their attack & so they are guilty of murder & should have got much longer imprisonments.

It'll be just like the Bulger case. Released after serving a minute fraction of their time, given new identities, new lives, new homes, jobs, everything.
A far better start to their adult lives than the majority of us get.
Teaches us all a valuable lesson. Conform & you will leave school with no job, no house etc.
Murder someone & you'll do a bit of bird & then live in the lap of luxury the rest of your life.
