20mph blanket speed limit?

20mph blanket speed limit?

Why not ban cars altogether? Better still ban ALL things that move - that way there won't be any casualties

the govt road safety advisors come up with some daft ideas, thankfully they rarely go any further than recommendations.

some idiot said:
He said a survey by the Transport Research Laboratory of 20mph zones across the UK and in other European countries found child road accidents fell by 67%, cyclist accidents by 29% and traffic flow by 27%

so it's mostly to do with the reduced traffic flow than the speed then.

The highways departments need to keep themselves busy, job justification. Probably dreamt up by a 50 something woman do gooder, with short hair, tweed skirt and a white nissan micra.

Dont know why cars get the blame, i mean cars dont drive on pavements and knock people down. Instead of the goverment locking down on speeding why not educate people more.

Hows about speed limiting? I suggest those genuinely caught and done for speeding by 10mph above the speed limits of 30, 40, 50, 60 or 70 should have speed limiting imposed, and let us more sensible drivers keep our liberty as a reward. Spam Time! (y)

Why not just trust people to be sensible? In the main most people drive sensibly based on the prevailing road conditions. Obviously the likes of new drivers, e.g. Beau are a bit of an exception as a general lack of experience and over enthusiasm is more of a problem If someone really cared they'd scrap speed cameras and reintroduce a meaningful transport police presence on the road.

A lot of the roads suggested you can't do more than 20 anyway - like the road my parents live on, which is in a 20mph zone. As long as the main routes into/ out of town aren't 20mph, I don't see a problem (though a lot of those you end up driving slower anyway).

For built-up and residential areas then yes, 20 is indeed plenty. Fully agree with the education argument, but whilst it will help - it won't be completely successful. Kids and animals do unexpected things. Is it really any consolation for you to say 'well they shouldn't have ran out' if you have a dead kid shaped dent in your grill? Plus, you'll probably need to pay the first 50 or 60 quid for your new windscreen.

Would be nice if they countered it with 80 or 90 on motorways...

Yes! a dead shaped kid in the shape on my grill is getting hung on the rear view mirror for ornimental purposes.

You can usually tell what speed you should be driving depending on how far you can see ahead and how much you can see to the left and right.

Good drivers don't need a 20 sign to know they should be doing less then 20.

There are some 30 roads round here I won't do 30 on even in the middle of the night because there are too much concealed driveways and too many parked vehicles to be able to see anything early enough to react safely at 30.

WTF does FTW mean?

Whatever happened to the public information films and teching kids the green cross code though? You never see anything like that any more, most parents just drag their kids across the road, if they even have hold of them in the first place - many run free.

Any road or non-adopted highway (including car parks) which isn't a thoroughfare should be made an enforceable 20mph limit. I've seen the t*ts who drive down my cul-de-sac like it's f**king Monaco in May, or around Sainsbury's car park like it's Silverstone or the church car park next to my work where mums park for the nursery...
