ok, firstly I am not going mad! I saw something about these in a recent new scientist and it interested me:

Does anybody know what a pop pop boat is (aka put put, tot tot, etc.) and did they have one when they were younger? Is it worth me buying a modern reproduction to go "wow, that's cool!" or not?!

Good, I am glad it wasn't a missing part of my knowledge, they look like wicked little things! Will let a few more post before I spoil the fun of what they are.

I think it's a little model boat, powered by steam - you use a wee coil of thin copper pipe and a candle if I recall correctly! :D It goes along making a pop-pop noise, hence the name.

Perfect Jonny boy, did you know that or just look it up on the net? They are clever little things, I want one/want to make one. They were normally made out of tin plate which is now banned for kids due to H&S.

They look like cool little things, wish I had one!

The "pop pop" is caused I believe by the way it pushes out and pulls in the water to propell/use for steam. A question was raised about how they worked in New Scientist, it is a clever little procedure.

Basically:

Water is heated in thin copper tubing until it turns to steam, pushing out water in the tube causing propulsion, (pop i think), at the same time, a vacuum is created when the steam condenses and hence the pressure drops, water is pulled in therefore at the other end of the tube (the other pop?) which is then heated and so on...

Nope, when I was a kid I had a book that told you how to make all sorts of interesting stuff, amongst them were these steam-powered toy boats! Might still have the book somewhere back home!

Your description of how it works is right as well :D

I saw one of those in a Thermo lecture last term...looked brilliant, went at a fair pace too.

Yeah we had one of them demonstrated in a thermodynamics lecture this year. They get quite quick once they get goin.

Will have to make one then I think, the pond needs a bit of action ;)

I originally intended using candle power....reckon the full blown furnace might suffice for the uprated version!
