What's made you smile today?

I always laugh at the big Audi’s on my street “ooh I want a big sports car but I can’t afford petrol for it” (buys a diesel) ;-)

More like ooh I want a big family car that gets good fuel economy but also goes fast, I’ll buy a diesel from a company that has a decades experience of winning at Le Mann with Diesel engines, beating all the petrol powered cars..... (y)

Also only just spotted this from you yesterday..

Yeah, maybe back in the time of the Beetle! Even if it was quite literally the face of a nation of you know what’s.... ;-)
aside from the horribly racist comment, the beetle was not produced in any numbers untill the British army took over the factory at the end of the war, they restarted the beetles production before handing the factory back over to the Germans later, and the cars where mainly bought by British servicemen and later by American service men when they started exporting them to the US.
So you can thank British army office Major Ivan Hirst for mankind VW what it is today.

You could if you’re really interested in Fascism look up what was going on in Italy at that time, if you’re going to be prejudice against an entire nation because of history, it would be a good idea to at least know where it all started.. subtitle hint, it was Italy.

I look forward to your further attempts to put German cars down, it’s hilarious and making me smile :D

The best bit being (and the main crux of your argument) VW shares are currently priced higher than Ferrari shares....

Apparently we all qualify :)

Still not a sports car in essence though like a Ferrari. More essence of trying too hard to compete with the guy next door, with whoever has the soonest upcoming lease renewal taking the lead ;-)

I don't see what's racist about it? The Beetle 'the peoples car' quite literally was a symbol of that horrific time and horrific movement... like it or not, I'm sure that's a fact. But if you do see it as racist, then you go to suggest something about Italians... you know... looks a bit bad on your part..

That's good for VW investors, and not good for Ferrari investors I'm sure, but as a consumer who likes cars it doesn't change my opinion.

I'll continue to be a huge fan of Fiat, Italian cars and more than likely continue to see German cars as dull Econo-boxes and symbols of everything a respectful guy shouldn't aspire to be (vain, trying too hard to prove a point, and cheap under the skin ((diesel running costs lol)) ).

It's just my opinion, as all the other nonsense that's taking this thread off topic (and anything I post or say), so do us a favour, don't mistake your criticism for intelligence. Same with the other guy, though, unlike you, I don't see the occasional good point in what he says. But I sure do respect it, regardless.

This kind of mini-debate made me smile today too, so it's all good! (y)

How many people in your street chose to buy an Audi instead of a Ferrari... seriously...

Your statement was related to the whole of Germany being the home of “you know what’s” actually the birth place of fascism was Italy and was by Mussolini, who the Italian people hung at the end of the war, they also took the fiat company away from the Agnelli family because of their links to Mussolini... I’d say the Italian people where pretty smart, see I’m not tarring the Italian people all with the same brush as you just did with Germany.

That's good for VW investors, and not good for Ferrari investors I'm sure, but as a consumer who likes cars it doesn't change my opinion.

That’s not how share prices and the finance industry works....

I have absolutely no problem with people liking what they like, I do take umbridge when they cross the line and start telling everyone else that what they like is the only thing and everyone should like their thing, then without need or reason start spewing nonsense about other things... it’s kinda what bullies do in the playground.

You call German cars dull econo-boxes while literally having just bought a car mainly due to it being cheap to buy, cheap to run and cheap to repair, and while on another part of this forum complaining about the ride and the headrests of said car. You bought a Petrol so you’re going to slam diesels, you bought a small car so you’re going to slam anything bigger, you are calling literally everyone who buys a German car “vain, trying too hard to prove a point and cheap under the skin” yet you’re literally shouting, that you bought this car to prove a point about cheapness and smallness, while being cheap and shouting about having an “italian car” and making comparisons with Ferrari’s. No one with an Audi A4 diesel estate, is claiming their car is a Bugatti Chiron, not believes they are driving a sports car

It's just my opinion,

One minute your ranting about being pro brexit, then anti German/anti fascist but then you’re spouting Marxist views, that no one should aspire to having something more or better, it was Marx views that inspired Mussolini’s socialist movement which he called fascism and inspired what happened in Germany.

It seems you need to make up your mind what your opinion is. Are you far right or far left?

I could not make any sense of this ?? What/who are you talking about, what other guy? Are you confusing intelligence with education?
Let’s be honest if you respected other people’s view then you wouldn’t care what they drive, you wouldn’t care what they think of your car and you’d be more happy with what you have. Constantly slating what other people have are not the actions of some one who is happy with what they have.

Seemingly every post you make in the whats made you smile thread is “I hate Audi’s and Audi drivers and anyone who drives a VW, VAG or German car” well guess what, there are a lot of us on this forum, as there are in the rest of the world.

Nobody. I’m sure your street is much the same!

I was talking about the Nazi’s and how the Beetle was a symbol of their ideals and vision. Not making any reference to the people of Germany whatsoever about back then.

Yes, but I’m not in the finance industry, am I? I have no idea what Fiat’s share price is and it didn’t affect my decision to buy another one!

Whilst obviously I like to mock / joke about German cars and the people who buy them, this is a car forum. We’re allowed to state opinions, seems you always have a thing or two to say about peoples opinions as if you know better..

Yes, cheap, economical, practical, definitely not a luxury car in the slightest. What I admire about the Panda is that it embraces what it is, and is the antidote to ‘trying to hard cars’, in my opinion. Even if the head restraints are a PITA, the car definitely has shortcomings.

I think diesels are phenomenal machinery on a ship or a lorry at best, but having them in cars hasn’t done humanity any good from a health and environmental perspective. You forget too with VW lying to their customers it’s completely understandable that as far as a brand goes, they’ve alienated a lot of people and I’m one of them.

I support Brexit personally, yes. I don’t think people shouldn’t get nothing better, but I also don’t think VW and its products are any better than run-of-the-mill. As I’m sure you get from my posts.

Schumi is the other guy posting on here. I’m talking about you, whilst you do make some valid points from time to time, your last paragraph applies to your own activity on here too…

"Let’s be honest if you respected other people’s view then you wouldn’t care what they drive, you wouldn’t care what they think of your car and you’d be more happy with what you have. Constantly slating what other people have are not the actions of some one who is happy with what they have."

So perhaps you could, respect that not everybody thinks VW is the bee’s knees?

Maybe you shouldn’t care so much about people on here choosing to drive Fiat’s and actually liking it?

Maybe you shouldn’t care that we don’t think too much of your (assumably VW branded car choice)?

It seems to me, you’re constantly slatting Fiat / anybody who could possibly have any love for the brand as much as any other?

Only difference being… this is a Fiat Forum.

So either lighten up on the jokes about German cars and don’t take em too seriously or consider taking onboard your own recommendations to me, because you’re guilty as charged of em all too! Only difference is I can admit that Fiat can be terrible at times and the cars are what they are, under no illusion.

I had written quite a lengthy reply but this is the what made you smile thread, and you seem hell bent on turning everything here into an argument.

I will point out you have only recently, repeatedly started slating German cars (several posts in the last few days) and even claimed to have deliberately damaged cars based on nothing more than the badge on the bonnet. You assume everyone who drives a German car think they are some how better than everyone else, when I can assure you most people don’t care what you drive they have more than enough of their own problems going on to care if the neighbours down the road think they have a supercar or not, or if their Audi A1 is better than a Panda.

I don’t look at every other car on the road to see if mine is better or not, I literally couldn’t care less if you have a panda or a Ferrari, good on you though if you’ve worked hard and bought a Ferrari, but then good on you if you’ve worked hard and bought your panda if that’s your dream car.

You seriously need to get over this belief that everyone is looking down on you, because 99.999% couldn’t care less, which is a similar percentage to the number of people who don’t find your anti Audi anti German car comments funny. This forum has never been about bashing other brands to make its self feel better about its choices.

I wouldn’t still be here if I didn’t like Fiats, but that doesn’t make me an obcessive Fiat Fan boi who will think everything they do is great, and trust me VAG have made their fair share of bad cars too.

Nobody. I’m sure your street is much the same!

I should probably point out that one of my neighbours has a Maserati Grandcabrio a rangerover sport and a Tesla Model X while another has two, not one but two Aston Martins, one for racing one for best and a Volvo estate to lug the dogs about In there is another with 2 brand new Mercedes (C250 coupe and a A45) and a VW California Campervan which are ridiculously expensive. One guy also has a vintage 1920’s thing that’s worth a fortune. One of our neighbours works for the Mini Challenge race series.

There are 25 houses in our street. So actually there are people where I live who can make decisions about if they want to buy a Ferrari or not.

Russia was ruled by the despotic Tzars who ran a feudal system of serfs and barons. It's not surprising they were the first to be deposed when their power stuttered during WW1.

Due to his time in WW1, Hitler was a hard left socialist. His new political party National Socialist German Workers' Party abbreviated NSDAP was commonly known as the Nazi Party. It was a left wing organisation not much different to the Russian Soviets. In fact you could not get a fag paper between Hitler and Stalin on basic politics.

The British Nazi party run by Oswald Mosely was another that grew out of hard left socialism.

Mussolini harnessed the Italian leanings towards communism. But when it all went pear-shaped, he was the first Nazi to get strung up because he was the weakest member. Italy's continued leanings towards communism were exactly why their post WW2 political system was created to divide and rule.

The Nazi parties dressed up their systems with flags and symbols but beneath their heirarchial structures they were al basically hard left wingers who needed a bogeyman to rail against. Hitler used the Jews (as did Moseley) for running the global capitalist empires against the common people. Stalin didn't bother with a middleman going straight for the "decadent capitalists". Though he was just as happy as Hitler to destroy Jews or anyone else who got in his way.

I had written quite a lengthy reply but this is the what made you smile thread, and you seem hell bent on turning everything here into an argument.

I haven't started any argument at all? I'm simply making comments / opinions / posts and in this situation, you and Schumi seem to have some kind of issue with them? Which is a long term recurring pattern. Most others don't seem to be triggered by anything I say, nor is anything I say intended to trigger anyone in any bad sort of way

I've always posted the odd joke or 'slate' about them since about 2015-ish. You seem to again be 'triggered' by any of these, but it's not unheard of on a car Internet forum nor is it unheard of for German cars or any kind of car to have a set reputation..

I didn't claim to damage cars based on the badge, in the past when people are parked like ar*es I drove past them and in some occasions the wing mirrors got clipped. What notion do you have that makes you think this is exclusive to German cars? Though largely, in my area, it is those that are poorly positioned - and without a disabled badge on display before you pull that one lol. You also assume things like 'a note wasn't left' etc.. Seems a bit stirring to me.

I don't think anybody cares what I drive nor do I care what they drive, I don't see where that comes into it. I am poking fun at German cars on a car forum online. It doesn't break the forum rules. 99% of members on here have no issue with it, I'm glad you challenge it / reply to it and wouldn't prefer it any other way, but you really need to chill out and not get so agitated. It's your constant need to try and correct things that aren't even wrong (and mostly are opinion, as I repeatedly state).. It's ruining threads like this across the forum.

I don’t look at every other car on the road to see if mine is better or not, I literally couldn’t care less if you have a panda or a Ferrari, good on you though if you’ve worked hard and bought a Ferrari, but then good on you if you’ve worked hard and bought your panda if that’s your dream car.

Why would you assume that I do? "Better" depends on how you're measuring better. I don't get too worried about peoples varying ideas of better nor try to force my viewpoint on others, maybe take some inspiration from that?

You seriously need to get over this belief that everyone is looking down on you, because 99.999% couldn’t care less, which is a similar percentage to the number of people who don’t find your anti Audi anti German car comments funny. This forum has never been about bashing other brands to make its self feel better about its choices.

I don't think anybody is looking down at me at all? Clearly, you take some kind of personal offence to anything anti-German-car related. Most people, as you rightly point out don't care... That's fine. Whether or not you can speak for anybody beyond yourself about whether they find them funny or not, probably best not to make claims like that.

I wouldn’t still be here if I didn’t like Fiats, but that doesn’t make me an obcessive Fiat Fan boi who will think everything they do is great, and trust me VAG have made their fair share of bad cars too.

I'm definitely not obsessed with Fiat, I love their cars for how weird they are and definitely forgive their far from perfect models when perhaps other buyers/owners wouldn't but I'm not the only one on here with that perspective. I seriously considered a number of other cars and segments before settling what I know and love with the Panda.

Fiat are actually quite frustrating, I for one would like to see them make a bit more effort in nearly everything they do but they are certainly in a world of their own! I do post / communicate this across the forum too, I hold no reservation in saying it at least how I interpret it to be!

Sounds like most of them have good taste, not all (I'm sure you know which ones I'm referring to)

Tl;dr: If you don't like the jokes being made about German cars by me / anyone else on here, then ignore it. It's not against the rules. Everybody has different opinions / sense of humour... Either ignore it, or continue to challenge it and I'll continue to reply. I really don't mind. I'm sure you can block me if you don't want to see my existence on the forum, but I'm definitely as entitled to post it until a moderator / administrator approaches me and explicitly says to stop it. So please, do not get triggered. That's not the intention. I'm not approaching this with bitterness or anger, but with light heartedness and 'banter' :)

Shall we take a look at your light hearted banter without anger or bitterness...

There were a few idiots driving German cars through the city centre (the real narrow streets next to the canals with one way traffic, plastered in cyclists / pedestrians / trams).. But the clear frustration in their red faces and desire to rev the crap out of their diesels (sounds terrible btw) for the 15 metre openings before slamming on again was entertaining!

Light hearted, all German car drivers are idiots.... Red faced and funny to laugh at...

I always laugh at the big Audi’s on my street “ooh I want a big sports car but I can’t afford petrol for it” (buys a diesel) ;-)

As we've now established, no one is buying a diesel Audi thinking they have a big sports car. How this reads intended or not is you being snide and contemptuous and condescending. definitely no essence of banter or joking.

My last Panda has been the destroyer of many Audi and BMW wing mirrors .... god knows how it didn’t fall off .. it was cracked, scratched and once the mirror fell off. I’m sure an entire new assembly cost less than the wiring loom for the more on those German cars, oops.

(And every time it was because either they were parked on a double yellow line at a junction OR crossing when it’s a 30 zone with a ‘one way priority’ stop, seeing the Panda and thinking they’ll take the risk). Hope their shortcut outweighs the repair cost...

Not sure when Vindictive and deliberate damage caused to someone else's car, then finding this funny, is "banter" and "light heartedness"

Seriously if someone smashed your new car wing mirror and then told you to get over it, its just banter, how would you take that?

This is the same exact attitude that people who key cars paint work adopt, I don't know anything about you, but you drive a fancy car therefore its fair game to damage your car.

I bought a Volkswagen, therefore I am the target of your attacks, insults and comments, I were driving down your street you would seemingly have no problem causing damage to my car. Plenty of other people here drive skoda's or VW's Audi's BMW, Porsche, I don't see those people laughing along with you?

This is in no way light hearted or banter, you're trying now to hide behind those terms but your words paint a picture of nasty, jealous and vindictive character or someone who has seriously misjudged the room.
You can't call all German car driver's idiots, when only a little way back in this very thread you took great offence to the possibility of being called an idiot yourself. very much a case of double standards, you're behaving like a bully behaves, makes nasty comments, looks for people to agree with them and when they get called out they where only "messing about" its just "banter"

The thing here is no one is joining in your 'light hearted banter' so to continue posting this sort of thing in the future is not to joke but to get a rise out of people and cause offence.

Either quit it, its not funny, or become a nasty little troll. the decision is yours.

Shall we take a look at your light hearted banter without anger or bitterness...

That's totally my opinion though on those guys who were driving in what's a pretty difficult place to drive. Furthermore, they're revving to intimidate other road users, speeding past them and slamming on, putting peoples lives at risk... Perfectly reasonable situation to reflect on as silly, in my opinion.

Light hearted, all German car drivers are idiots.... Red faced and funny to laugh at...

When did I say 'all'? See, this is where you're getting triggered and assumably personally offended. Don't, it's not personally intended to apply to you. I'm sure you've never driven your VAG product in that precise situation and aggravated passers by. As you're saying, not all of them are like that. I'm fully aware.

As we've now established, no one is buying a diesel Audi thinking they have a big sports car. How this reads intended or not is you being snide and contemptuous and condescending. definitely no essence of banter or joking.

Yeah, right enough, when has any joke in the history of humour ever been snide or contemptuous or condescending towards a situation/group/object? hmmm. You might not find it funny, but plenty of people do. And you don't speak 'for the people', you speak for yourself, and so do I. What we say isn't fact, nor does it have to be. It's opinion. (Seeing a theme here?)

Not sure when Vindictive and deliberate damage caused to someone else's car, then finding this funny, is "banter" and "light heartedness"

Yeah, they've deliberately placed it at a dangerous part of a busy fast moving road, funny that..

Seriously if someone smashed your new car wing mirror and then told you to get over it, its just banter, how would you take that?

As I've said before, if I parked it at a busy junction or blatantly in the line of passing traffic where under no circumstances should you do so according to the Highway Code, I feel like I'd have nobody to run and cry to... For about £20 there'd be a new one ordered and in a weeks time it'd be good as new. That's when driving a cheap Fiat is remarkable, not losing sleep at night over it.

This is the same exact attitude that people who key cars paint work adopt, I don't know anything about you, but you drive a fancy car therefore its fair game to damage your car.

As also already said, whichever kind of car it is is irrelevant. Could be a falling apart 106 hanging on for its dear life {un-fancy} and still treated the same way. Again, don't drive it like an idiot (and I'm sure you'll agree, someone parking in the situations I've described is idiotic without being unfair).

I bought a Volkswagen, therefore I am the target of your attacks, insults and comments, I were driving down your street you would seemingly have no problem causing damage to my car. Plenty of other people here drive skoda's or VW's Audi's BMW, Porsche, I don't see those people laughing along with you?

Absolutely not. Again, no intended damage. But if you were blocking the street and the only way I could get through was to squeeze through, damn right I would. But if you're a reasonable person, And I'm sure away from the keyboard you are, you'd have enough sense to park safely and not actively aggravate anyone around you unnecessarily.

This is in no way light hearted or banter, you're trying now to hide behind those terms but your words paint a picture of nasty, jealous and vindictive character or someone who has seriously misjudged the room.

You can interpret it the way you want to, and you're sure making a lot of assumptions / connections that I don't believe for one second. I don't think I'm misjudging this situation as much as you are by the sounds of where this is going..

This is an Internet forum. Grow up. You can call me what you want. I can joke about German cars if I want. You can take it personally as the owner of one if you want. I can't stop you. You won't get any different in any other kind of forum / community. There's always a butt of the joke / victimised group but it's probably wise to not personally weigh yourself down to take offence to it.

The thing here is no one is joining in your 'light hearted banter' so to continue posting this sort of thing in the future is not to joke but to get a rise out of people and cause offence.

Again, see it for whatever you want. I certainly would defend or stand corrected on anything I post, and always have something to say back. I have repeatedly said it's my opinion / viewpoint and I'm not telling anyone they're wrong. Yes, joking about German cars is playing to a stereotype. So are jokes about the colours of peoples hairs or lifestyle choices. That's how jokes work. It's when somebody like yourself gets, what's termed on the Internet as 'butt hurt' a whole big scene comes of it, hence the unfortunate vandalism to this otherwise good thread.

Either quit it, its not funny, or become a nasty little troll. the decision is yours.

You said it yourself there (y)

You said it yourself there (y)

Actually i think you said it yourself.

I mean, If you TRULY believe that we’re idiots and that’s the cause of your whole laughing at the rest of the population I can only pity you ~

Perhaps you’ll be a bit more considerate and reflective of other viewpoints to your own after reading this? But I cannot see it. Prove me wrong? ;-)

#hypocrite

We've had a F-off great Merlin helicopter doing circles overhead today. Who knows why but they really make you wonder how such a huge thing can fly.

Definitely! Looks like less people over there measure their masculinity by their choice of automobile lol

I was thinking more in terms of not disposing of perfectly good cars. Certainly, in the UK, our attitude towards cars, along with everything else, is absolutely shocking tbh.

The one that winds me up is "I can't justify investing that much money (for repairs) on a car of this age" while talking about something around 4 years old that's still pretty new yet lost most of its depreciation. Excluding some classics, no car is ever an investment so replacing some worn parts saves a fortune compared to replacing the car.

The next one is "too old to bother about - I just drive it". Yeah right buy cheap run cheap then complain when it blows up from neglect.

Go to Spain and tired looking cars just keep going and going. They are often very basically equipped compared to British spec cars. In Italy the base spec is lucky to get carpets and even door mirrors are additional costs.

Certain parts of France, some cars look like they’ve been driven home from a salvage yard.
I once saw a brand new R Class Mercedes with most of the front end missing, happily parked up in a hyper market car park and while I sat there wondering if anyone was killed I’m the horrific accident that has befallen the poor car, the woman got in and drove off, with the wheel arch liner dragging on the wheel as the front parking sensors, dragging on the ground.

They don’t rot like they do in the UK, which helps longevity.

Even a well rust proofed car will eventually give in to months of driving on gritted roads.

Of course but my car is an 07 and looking great on from a corrosion point of view. The back axle needed some work to prevent it turning to dust (stitch in time etc) but otherwise its wear and tear stuff.

I remember a very long time ago on a canal boat in Nantes being woken by a bang of car door and screaming car engine. A woman was reversing a Citroen BX out of a steeply sloped parking bay. There was no smell of clutch but she basically turned the key and floored it. I doubt that one reached 100K in Ks never mind miles.

Wrong number. It makes me smile when I get a wrong number. Had one when I came home from work not long ago.......Here's:D how more often than not it pans out. ME...hello, silence for a few seconds, THEM... hello is that Sandras husband? ME.... no, THEM... are you sure? who is it then? Me...well not Sandras husband. Them....what's your number? Me.... not in the habit of giving out my number to total strangers I said it very much looks like you have dialed the wrong number for sure. THEM....do you know Sandra or her hubby.?..:D OK this was a wee bit different from the usual & I thought I'd play along for a while. ME..I'm Jim. THEM... so how are you there? You couldn't make this up, this women would not give up.....:D

I was very polite & could've went on for ages, in the end I said, got to go things to do & all that.
