I just read this in a email I got and so I wanted to post it on here as it seems like a good idea which may help us all....

Campaign to Reduce UK Petrol Prices - a rip-off at 80p/litre

We are going to hit close to 89p a litre by the summer. Want petrol
prices
to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. Philip
Hollsworth offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain
day"
campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies
just
laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt
ourselves by
refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than
it was a
problem for them.

BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can
really
work. Please read it and join in!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us
to think
that the cost of a litre is CHEAP at 77p -80p, we need to take
aggressive
action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace not
sellers. With
the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take
action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come
down is if
we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we
can do
that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two
Biggest
oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not
selling any
petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce
their
prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.

But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso
and BP
petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp out on me
at this
point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to
reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to
at
least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least
ten more
(300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches
the sixth
generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION
consumers! If
those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends
each, then
30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level
further,
you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all You
have to
do is send this to 10 people. That's all (and not buy at ESSO/BP).

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to
ten more
people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could
conceivably
be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you
and I
had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a
difference.
If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE
RANGE

Action:
It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your
petrol
at Shell, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons (75p), Jet etc. i.e. Boycott
BP and
Esso.

Cruisin aint a crime!!

I thought this email did the round a few years ago, or am I mistaken.

I only buy from Shell, so I am OK jack :)

I dont know if this email went around before mate. This is the first I've seen it, petrol prices are getting too high now....

Hopefully somehow petrol prices come down

Good on you. Whoever thought of that is a bloody genius. Do it - all of you, Im fed up of 80p a litre. My needle hasnt been above half for two months.

And Morrisons is cheaper and eaier anyway.

Just a few thoughts:

Whoever made this up wasn't a genius, just probably an employee for Shell or another major oil company not listed.
It's simple, the recent price increases for petrol aren't related to the government (who get about 75% of the revenue from the cost of petrol), it's due to unified price increases by OPEC.
OPEC set the price, not esso or other major oil companies (obviously this can be slightly variable, but not much)
Oil as a commodity is running out rapidly, if price increases lead to lower oil usage, I am afraid it is a good thing.
Buying lots of fuel from a few lead companies will do fairly little to a company like BP who own some of the largest oil refineries, that is where their profits will increase and they will just be forced to charge more to cover their forecourt losses.

I will stop now, but think of it on an easier level (the oil world is too hard for the majority of us to comprehend!) If you stopped buying from Sainsburys because you thought their prices were too high, could they just lower prices? No, in the medium term they would go out of business and competition would be less => higher long term costs for us all. The fact is the fixed costs (not literally fixed (indirect costs) as per the business sense, but the costs that can't be varied by the sellers of consumer petrol/diesel) are so massive in proportion to the cost of fuel, we can do little to get them changed.

The only way we can make a difference, a proper difference, is thought lobbying the government for lower rates of tax (the majority of the cost) OR lobbying OPEC nations, which the government - along with the US government - is currently doing. However, none are long term solutions.

Let me know if anybody feels I have got something incorrect above :)

There are no long term solutions end of. Oil is going to become more and more scarce and the price will continue to rise until the day it runs out. A viable alternative must be sought - now.

I just hope they would wait for me to graduate as a chemical engineer so i can be let lose on some of the problems! Hydrogen fuel cells are supposedly around the corner, have to wait and see - at the moment, this isn't very viable because most of the energy used in the process will have to come from fossil fuels anyway!

Exactly, you said it exactly right "old cars". Anyway, how many cars now are left with LRP (i.e. 4 star), it didn't take too long to convert completely, cars are regularly updated and hence the turn over is quick.

Just checked my Outlook, I received the very same above email from a colleague on the 10th May 2002 - not very effective then!!!

I've seen this before too.

Thing is, if this is so old and the price is still more or less 89p/litre - what does that say about the complaint of petrol prices rising?
