Ok so help run various groups and its hard to get people together to share what the plan will be or talk about what the plan etc will be for the following session.

Now everyone on the team has internet access, so how would this goal be best achieved?

A dedicated collaboration site?
A forum?

Would need to be free, have the facility for uploading files to it, have some kind of calender facility, and some for of chat/forum base for conversations etc. Also password/username access.

There was a thing called Groove specifically designed for this...but it got swallowed up by Microsoft was year, and the technology was wholesale exported into the forthcoming Office System 2007.

Theres bound to be a free alternative.

you mean with free hosting? could you not use the likes of bebo, facebook etc?

No as in the likes of some of the bloging sites, they're free with more individual control over whats on them. Have seen some through pcadvisor or such like, but cant find them no i need it.

I guess something along the lines of yahoo groups or something, but more streamlined.

Thats exactly the type of thing i'm after, but no need for it to be software based though, all online is a must, so i can be accessed anytime anywhere.

i manage a project involving over 200 people across 5 uk locations. it wouldnt be possible without MS Sharepoint. when i joined people used network drives, now we have online document management with versioning control and access restrictions, access from anywhere on earth, and all sorts of other great stuff.

implementing Sharepoint is a doddle, and its free. it wont answer all your prayers, but it is definately the future as far as group online collaboration is concerned. it integrates with MS Office brilliantly. MS will start charging for it once they get us all addicted, but until then its the best thing you can get for free.

the main missing element is a virtual meeting room where people can communicate as a group. for that we use sametime, kind of like messenger. it works nicely with our lotus notes email client, allowing people to arrange meetings and have them added to antendee's calendars, complete with reminders.

the virtual workplace is a wonderful thing.
