I need to get some new shoes tomorrow (MOT at the weekend and although my tyres are legal, they need replacing shortly so may aswell get it done now). I always say it like "Verd-stine" or "Veed-stine" but is this wrong? I am sure the bloke said it differently at the tyre place but he said it too quickly for me to hear properly. I don't think we have many dutch/flemish speakers on here? :(

Ah I didn't look at it like that, the v and r sort of combining with r being more prominant...hmm. I might just point and go "the same on the rear of my car already" and smile ;)

I refuse to buy from mytyres again, I bought some Maxiss last year and one has 4.5mm remaning (offside) and the other 2-2.5mm remaining (nearside). I thought it was odd but put it down to the nearside being a poorer surface, until I noticed such the large difference. I looked closely and although they were bought at the same time and are the same brand/model, completely different ID markings on it show they're from a different batch. I'd have a lot more wear left otherwise :(

Vredestein took the autoexpress tyre test again last year and I have been very pleased with them so will stick with them :)

thats not good, no matter what batch they should have the same compound, and hence wear properties, as dictated by the wear rating (check both tyres to see if they do have same wear rating)

i was gonna try Vredestein next, but i think you just put me off :(

and remember, beware a tyre with a wear rating above 400, it means the compound is too hard for 'enthusiastic' driving. a traction rating of B or C means problems if you need to stop in the wet. i'm still not quite sure about temp ratings tbh.

No no, that's my old tyres I am replacing, Maxxis (or Maxiss). My Vredesteins have sat on the rear and barely worn in 20k miles. I want to see how they perform on the front though as they are obviously infamous for poor weather properties.

The Maxxis are both the same model number etc. but one has additional markings under the model number (MA-1 or something, can't remember) and from this you realise they're very different. What would the wear rating look like?

No point complaining to mytyres or Maxxis I doubt, they could just say I fitted one later than the other, my car is at fault, my driving is at fault or poor fitting (lol) - just one of those things.

oh good, Vredestein next it is then.

the wear rating will usually say TREADWEAR400 or something like that. i think all tyres sold in europe must have a wear, traction and temp rating stamped on them.

a bigger number wear rating means the tyre will last longer, but obviously that means the rubber is a harder compound so it has less grip. 200-300 is sporty, 300-400 is a sensible buy, anything higher is for your mother's car only. anything under 200 is just a waste of money.

I shall have a look when I go to my car :) I bet they say the same but I assure you the wear difference is huge! Different blend I guess, maybe their wear rate is the same but one wears quicker at motorway speed than the other or something along those lines.

i remember when this happened to someone i knew years ago and it turned out to be the wheel bearing. i figured it out when i jacked the car up and couldnt rotate the wheel by hand, so i told him to relese the handbrake, and he said he already had. :D
stub axle was fecked and wheel cover was warped from the heat.

No problems are far as I know, we had it up last weekend ready for the MOT and checked over the front suspension components and seemed fine - these were on the front ;)

One of the ball joint covers is suspect in that I beleive the rubber is slightly cracked but only on the surface so it's fine for now, whether the MOT tester will agree is a different matter.

High-speed roundabouts scrubbing the loaded (nearside) wheel? :p

lol...you know me far too well...;) I wish it was for that reason, I would get dizzy though. Funnily enough, my route to and from work has 3 quick clockwise bends/roundabouts which on the way home are slow due to traffic, it would have to be some odd wear to achieve that though!

I think my tyres will get a pounding on the way home tonight, don't want to be having them swapped with so much tread still left on

Jug: They're finished, even the one with 4mm on wasn't worth refitting really. They're gone now. I looked for tread wear numbers but found nothing on either, same on my new ones?

I just went and got the new ones, they call them "Vee-da-stine" - I said he was wrong, we had a fight, he won...no wait, I just smiled and repeated "Vee-da-stine". Got 2 new Sportrac 2s fitted for £84 all inclusive. I needed to go for the sportrac 2 and not 3 out of choice since my rears are already the number 2. I think 2006 autoexpress tested the 3s out of memory.

Mytyres.com do them at £32.60 delivered I think (sportrac 2) - couldn't find sportrac 3. Allow £8-15 for fitting.

ALl this is based on 195/50/15 (V).

Anybody in Nottingham; yet again I recommend ETS (Eden Tyre Sales). I appreciate their professional tone and no complaints about their work. Unlike many places, I don't feel like they treat me as an idiot because I go in dressed smartly and "therefore don't have a clue".

vred - like bread
e - like esh
stein - like that cornish chef bloke

i think...........

Vredestein looks like a Germanic word (Dutch is a Germanic language, and so is English - not sure where the tyres are made), so I would suspect the correct phonetic pronounciation is:

Fray - deh - shtine

In German the letter 'V' is normally pronounced as an 'F'.

However, as most tyre depots are staffed by illiterates you'd be better off saying:

Vred-e-stine (as it is phonetically written)

else they probably won't understand what you are saying

£42 a wheel fitted isn't bad at all. I think I paid £100 for 2x 195/50R15 Toyo Proxes, and to have a pair of Proxes swapped from one set of wheels to another.. and then all the tyres that had been removed to be put on other rims! So that's a pair of tyres and 6x fitting for a flat £100. Think I got a 'deal' on the fitting ;)

Plus I went in looking smart too :D Thanks Derek Short, Darlington (y)

I think it's a bargain tbh, I imagine for my size, fitted, I couldn't find much cheaper than around £35 for a budget, so £7 extra for one that is extremely highly rated is darn good! The sportrac 3 out does the Conti PremiumContact 2 (?) in the autoexpress test, I believe that's a well rated tyre.

I tend to find that if you go into a place like that looking smart they treat you as an idiot that knows nothing but how to type or something; I am very glad when they don't!

I just took it for a drive and am very pleased :)

Problem with tyre tests is they are quite specific to the car they test. For proof of that just look at 'Hedgefinders' which are leathal on Cinqs but my Tipo Sedicivalvole had them when I bought it and it survived on the wet winter roads long enough for me to find some original wheels and get it Bridgestone Potenzas. That said I've always heard good things about the Vredesteins so I think you have got a deal.

Worst place for turning up smart are scrap yards. When they see you approaching they must think you're there to serve a warrant for their arrest, as I always get looked up and down before an almost nervous "Can I help you mate?"

Yeah, I infact hate scrap yards for that reason, even going for my MOT I think I will get taken for a ride simply because I don't look like somebody who would know his boot from his bonnet. :( I don't attempt to "talk the talk" either to try to fit in. Oh well, that's life and it's hardly the worst thing in the world. Thankfully the guy we use for MOTs knows our family now and is 100% genuine. I had a free MOT as part of my kwikfit insurance. I checked on the net and found out the 2 closest MOT stations from me:

Mansfield (16 miles)
Skegness (76 miles)

erm, LOL! I am not doing a 32 mile round-trip to take my car to a Kwikfit station.

I have vredestein m/s tyres on the panda. Doubt I would go for them again, I wouldnt know what to ask for . I cant just point and say I have them, it aint a sweet shop

I go everywhere in oily jeans, it makes me look like I know what I am doing :D
