hey i have just seen a car which i am 99% sure is the car which was stolen from my dads garage. is there anyway i can check a number plate to find the owner?

Well 1 hour + ago you called have called 999 if you were sure it was a stolen car being driven away....otherwise your local police station.

a stolen car isnt a life or death situation, i've been told off for calling 999 before when i was mugged and my mate was stabbed because it wasnt life or death.....

If it was "your" number plate you can enquire as to the current whereabouts, it will probably cost you a small fee under the data protection act.

Or just be economical with the truth and say I have some service history for the owner and would like to contact them?

If the person was stabbed inthe heart then it is a life or death situation surely?

I soooooooo want that to be true... not that I'm a cynic or anything :D

It was true in a way, though as far as I know it was a car that was being vandelised.

I had a similar situation when I tried to report a couple of thieves trying to take off the alloy wheels of an S-Type. I was given stick when I called 999 but when I tried to call my local police station I was put in a que. Just to be amusing, despite my best efforts to describe the situation the person on the other end just kept trying to convince me that it was, "someone changing their wheel." Would the person have a friend of his with a getaway car with the boot open? Pah.

There was a time when someone had a Ford Focus ST, despite it being stolen the police said, "Oh dear, we don't even chase those." What? You have a few large engines salloons at your disposal and you say you can't keep up with a Focus!?

ive dialled 999 at work just because of masses of drunk teenagers.
one time local station stopped answering the phone, so we pressed the panic button, that soon shifted the drunk chavs. although we did get a slap on the wrist.

in a real emergancy ive dialed local station instead of 999, but i think that was from panicking about the man attacking a coleague with a screw driver

You mean for an ambulance I presume, for the police you use 999 for crimes in action that are of an urgent nature. Seeing a stolen car for example is, noticing some fraud at work isn't. I also suggested an alternative.
